So I'm building a new gaming pc,

I bought a windows 8.1 cd for my old build and used it and giving it to my parents.

Now I need to buy another OS, so if I buy windows 8.1 for this build and get my parts, build the pc, and install the OS after July 29th, which is when Windows 10 launches, would I still be able to upgrade to windows 10 for free?

Use that same copy of the disc for your installation. Then, for like $15, purchase a product key. This will allow you to install 8.1 without having to pay $90 for the full price. After that you can update to 10 for free. I'm currently running the beta on my system, and it looks great.

Oh wow, how do I purchase the product key? Does Microsoft offer it or something?

https://www.reddit.com/r/microsoftsoftwareswap/comments/2ixue7/h_windows_7_8_81_windows_server_office_visio/ pm the seller, and use paypal to send them 15 bucks.  Afterwards they will give you a key that is legit.

The keys are legit, just not obtained legitimately.

They will work, though, so just ignore i said the above OP...

Ok thanks. Which one do I choose, it says Windows 8.1 Standard and Windows 8.1 Standard N, what does that mean?

How are they obtained then?  Most people suggest doing this.

Well, some of them might be purchased using stolen credit card details, and then sold on to sellers like this (reddit, g2a etc.); some may be stolen physically; some may be MSDN keys... A whole range of ways.

Think of it this way, the seller there is selling them for what, $20? Now, obviously the seller has to make money, so they've bought the keys for less than $20 each... Now, i've personally asked them how they obtain them and their reply was 'we purchase them from dealers all around the world'... So yeah, idk.

My Windows 7 key was purchased off of there though, works fine, and actually shows to be a retail key.
