I want to run Linux on my new build to save money 

How much capacity does Ubuntu take up 

5gb of space is required to install ubuntu.

Their live distro was <1GB the last time I checked

WiFi - 7ms, 22Mb down, 10Mb up

What is the point of your build? Gaming? Normal house stuff? Web browsing?

I'd say Ubuntu is fine if you are new to Linux. The base install takes about 7GB of space. But then you really can't install much. 

Why is space a concern? I mean even the most low end HDD's are at least 100GB or so. Unless you take a 60GB  SSD. And 60GB is plenty for Ubuntu. Less so if you wish to game
