Do I really need the r9 290?

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

280x (Overclocked) or 290 for max performance

The 380 does have more VRAM than the 280x though

Hi! I really cant decide between the 280 or 280x, 380 4gb, or 290. I want to play GTA V on high - ultra at 1080p 60fps. BF4 at max settings.. Can the 380 4gb or 280 deliver my wants? Or will I just have to go for a 290? Note: I will OC the card i'm getting as much as I can. Sorry if i was scrambling around the gpu topic!

Thanks :D

I'd get the 380. Same amount of VRAM and less  power consumption and lower temps. It's probably going to be perfectly fine :)

i would go for that to if i din't own a r9 290 since you also get full directx support or something with "better effects"

You would think Ubisoft would support the Bulldozer based architectures more given their digging themed names like bulldozer, Piledriver, Steamroller and Excavator.

How does your rig perform? I see that you have a similar setup when compared to my upcoming pc.

Well, In Witcher 3 this is what I get

Low settings = 65 fps average (average is between wilderness and novigrad)

Medium settings = 52 fps average

high = 40 fps average

ultra probably 30-35 fps average

This is without hairworks on btw.

I also did a bench in Unigine a few mins ago via my own presets based on what I use in games.

Here it is

Thermals time!

Temps were as follows

GPU core = 68*C max

GPU VRM1 = 72*C max

GPU VRM2 = 28*C max

Fan speed = 35% (barely audible)

Case airflow = poor

The 280 doesn't really overheat so the 270X should be even better. I'd say you are good to go :)

EDIT: here are the results FPS:

64.2

Score:

1618

Min FPS:

28.7

Max FPS:

117.5

Windows NT 6.2 (build 9200) 64bit

No problem. Mind you, I dislike AA and Tessaltion so those might not behave well. I advise you to run the AMD optimized tessalation from CCC.
