Does anyone have a good source of knowledge regarding video cables?

I get screwed buying cables ALL THE TIME.

Example 1: Have a HDMI cable that doesn't support CEC that Kod/RPi uses.

Example 2: Buy a DisplayPort 1.2 cable of 3m but can't support 144hz at 1440p AND DP 1.2 is a myth! Every DP cable supports 1.2.

Example 3: Screw up with a DVI cable that has the wrong pins and doesn't fit the GPU (analogue/digital stuff I reckon)

OR: Where do I get a DP cable of 3m that supports 1440p@144hz ?

:]

I can't even imagine screwing up with a DVI cable, wrong pins you say?

All DP Cables will support 1440p 144Hz when 3m long, as long as the ouput isn't DisplayPort 1.0 if it's 1.2/1.2a/1.3 it will do it with 3m with any cable

As for a good guide, I've never seen one myself, there are all those shitty basic buyers guides, which are next to useless, but that's about all I've seen.

For me I just learn/memorize the standards and their limitations and how each works with adapters/other standards.

A good guide would be nice though, because I do see a lot of people get confused about different things, and a lot of people giving the wrong advice too because they 'assume' it's right

This cable doesn't get 144Hz with my 780Ti. Are you saying my GPU is at fault here?

The monitor just crashes and shows a black screen with some flying R, G and B pixels

DisplayPort 1.2 has enough bandwidth for 1440p @ 144Hz, and all types of DisplayPort cables will work with 1.1/1.2/1.3, there are no cable variants for display port, if your monitor is capable of 144Hz at 1440p and you're using the DisplayPort connection then it should be working.

A standard passive displayport cable will work at the full bandwidth upto 3 meters, that's the rated spec.

As to why you aren't getting 144Hz I doubt it's a GPU issue, which monitor do you have, and also have you tired increasing the refresh rate in the control centre, not just the Screen resolution settings?

Its an Asus ROG Swift.

Earlier I tried the Display's built-in frequency switch and that crashed the display when trying to go to 120/144.

I tried using the NVIDIA Control Panel but I don't get the option to go higher than 85Hz:

Oh the RoG Swift, well that monitor is known to be riddled with issues for a lot of people, one of which was that it was limited to 85Hz, or 100Hz for a lot of people (Even with ULBM off), this was caused by different things though, and most of the time it happened to people using an AMD GPU with the monitor, but it did happen to people using nvidia GPUs as well, and for some of them changing the cables fixed it, but for others they needed to RMA their monitor and that fixed it.

The more likely problem is the monitor itself needing to be RMA'd, but there is also a chance you just have a 'bad' DP Cable, not because it's 3 meters, or because it isn't a '1.2' cable or w/e, but if somehow you managed to buy a RBR exclusive DisplayPort Cable (Which are very rare, but there are a few out there) then that would explain why you can't get 144Hz at 1440p, because most of them will just about run 1080p at 60Hz. But they should be listed and sold as RBR and be longer than 3m, so you would/should know if you brought one, and it's pretty unlikely you did.

All other DisplayPort cables will support RBR/HBR/HBR2 and are rated for 3m max (Unless it's an active DP cable, then they can go a lot longer, at a much much much higher cost.)

If I were you I'd try a different cable if you have one lying around, or if you can borrow one from a mate, and if that doesn't work then you probably need to get your monitor RMA'd

The original 2m cable works perfectly, ive never had any problems with that one. THe new cable I bought was just listed as "dp 3m 1.2"

Im returning the cable no worries, will try a different one.

IMO it's most likely a faulty cable. All DP cables that meet spec should be capable of 1440p 144Hz, but of course you can get bad cables. Usually I get cables from Cable Matters.

Got a new 3meter cable from a different brand (Belkin, expensive) and it works fine.

The "faulty" cable was made by StarTech, a company that delivers DP cables up to 50 feet (15 meters). Since they must disregard the spec on those longer cables they probably don't follow the spec with the shorter cables either. I got a refund from the webshop and got to keep the cable.
