Win10 Install

Go to solution Solved by GoodBytes,

You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.

Does that mean I can just put it on a USB, start up my computer, run the program and clean-install onto my SSD? Or do I still need my SSHD first?

Hmmm.. I don't know. If it is like Windows Insider Build upgrades, then no. If it like Windows 8 upgrade offer when Win8 was released, then yes.

So when we get the installer for Win10 in a week, does it allow us to choose which storage drive we put it on?

If installing it via Optical media/USB yes, if doing it through reserving in Windows 7/8 then it will act like a windows update and will stay on the hard drive that your OS is already on.

Check out the FAQ from Microsoft:

It says that you can clean install Windows 10. But I believe you need to upgrade your Windows to Windows 10 first so that you are validated and own Windows 10.

While there is no info on if there will be an easy site to download an ISO of Windows 10 just by entering your current Windows product key (as of yet). So far, the FAQ suggests that you need to upgrade first.

If you want to do a clean install of Windows 10 at some point in time, you need either a USB thumb drive of a blank DVD to extract the ISO onto.

(USB flash drive needs to be made bootable, they are vaeriety of tools for this, including Microsoft very own: http://wudt.codeplex.com/

A benefit of the upgrade, although minor depending on you, is that if you have Media Center in your current Windows, you'll get a DVD playback app, as Media Center has been discontinued. Not sure if that app will be available on day 1 or later, but it states in the FAQ about this app. Just be sure that Media Center is installed and works before upgrading.

If you have Windows 8 Pro without Media Center and interested in the DVD player app, like I am, you need to purchase the 10$ media center add-on from the control panel > add feature (if I recall correctly). A product key will be given for the media center add-on to add it back if you re-install. However, I don't know if this app will remain with you if you clean install Windows 10 later on. If it is a universal app, then they are chances that it will be registered with your Microsoft account, and remain with you, meaning, if you clean install Windows 10 later, the app can be downloaded and used from the App store, and not have to install your current Windows and then upgrade to Win10 after just to get it back.

I might be wrong, but after you upgrade to windows 10, you should have a 'reset' option in windows itself that allows you to do a clean install, without having to download ISOs and stuff.

But then I have to re-install everything, right?

As in, would it wipe my SSHD along with my SSD? Or would I just have to back that stuff up then go from there?
