I just wanted to see what see what we could get going with $500 USD!

I think this build would do pretty well!

MUST BE UNDER $500!

that being said ...

HOW LOW CAN WE GO?

CAN WE GO DOWN LOW?

ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR?

xD

you can do better.

you can grab a Athlon 860k, saving a little bit, then grabbin a R9 280. Thus you basically get almost a GTX 960. Cpu performance take a small hit (in games its basically 10 FPS. Dont worry, youll stay above 60 FPS in most titles).

860k > 6300

This is probably the best you can do.

he cant, hell shoot way past his 500 USD budget. due to the increased price of an i3.

Athlon 860k + 280 or 380 gives him best bang for his buck at this price point.

True.

The 860k/380 beats outs the i3/750ti, even if the 860k is slightly bottlenecked, the better GPU makes up for it. Not to mention 4 real cores is pretty much necessary fro AAA gaming.

Anyway for gaming at 1080p 60fps med/high setting the 860k will serve anyone we looking for a PC experience on a console budget. 860k/360 == PS4 ;) just need that pesky OS unless you like linux.

You must not see that there is only $5 difference

750Ti isnt even a match for a 280 or 380

280 VS 750Ti

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1332?vs=1130

280X vs 750Ti

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1041?vs=1130

285 (380) vs 750Ti

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1333?vs=1130

check those links. The R9 380 is even faster then the 280. The 280X even faster then that again.... you CAN NOT compare those two setups, the FPS difference isnt even remotely close to warrant a 5 USD saving gettin a i3

EDIT:

Benchmark of 860k (860k is slightly higher clocked then the 7850k, but its the same CPU used in both) vs i3 4330 (slightly more powerful then 41xx series by like 5%)

Motherboard: ASRock H81M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($54.99 @ Mwave)
= 150 ish USD

yes you can get a mobo to 20 USD less. so say 135 USD....

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860K 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($69.49 @ Newegg)

Motherboard: ASRock FM2A88M PRO3+ Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard  ($48.98 @ Newegg) <- mobo that can OC

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-HD2 Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard  ($39.99 @ Micro Center)  <- mobo that cannot OC

and... drumroll please

70 + 50 = 120, close, still cheaper and close to same performance. But you can OC with this setup to regain some of the performance difference
70 + 40 = 110, 25 USD difference.... you cannot OC, but its still cheaper by a notable margin. its 25 USD that you wouldnt have, and you are STILL NOT losing any noticable amounts of GAMING performance.

you see, at some point, you should pull your head out of whatever hole you stuck it in, and look at some benchmarks. Sure intel is better. NO DISCUSSION THERE. but they also COST MORE. And if you gotta pay with 1 second slower to open a web page to save 25 USD, then FFS, if that ONE SECOND matters so much, please just go buy the i3 and shut up. If you do not care about ONE MEASLY SECOND in a browser, then buy the 860k. In games the i3 4170 and Athlon 860k will BOTH get over 60FPS with a R9 285. It just so happens that you can get a Athlon 860k + R9 285 FOR UNDER 500, while intel will get slightly above.
