having an emulator isn't illegal, but downloading ROMs is!

you can just rip the game off of the cartridge itself and emulate that, and it would be fully legal.

 

as an avid emulator gamer myself tough, i have nothing against it. i do try to atleast buy other more recent games from the company that made the game i'm emulating tough!

Technically downloading ROMs of the games is illegal, but I personally don't care much about this.

 

I buy current prints of games that I like from devs that I want to support. I also buy consoles regularly.

 

If I want to play something from the SNES, if I go out and shell out hundreds of dollars for Super Metroid, Nintendo doesn't gain from that. Just some random collector or re-seller. In that case, me "pirating" the game is entirely inconsequential. There is a huge audience of hardcore physical games collectors who will gladly buy that Super Metroid. Even the random collector/re-seller isn't losing business because that collector community will be enough to support it.

 

It's kinda the same thing as making custom servers for old online games that devs no longer support. It's not like the dev is losing anything because you want to experience the old game that they no longer make any money from.

There are ton of DOS games emulated at Internet Archives. Those games no longer have valid copyright claim, so they are free to use. Games with valid copyright would be illegal to get emulated unless doing all by yourself. Maybe check if GOG has the hand in question.
