From what I read it seems to perform better than a GTX 980, and the strix runs at a cool 72C and a pretty normal 41 DBa at full load.  So yeah, it is one of the best cards for a $550 budget.

Since I am at 1080p, would the MSI 390X be a better choice? Apparently it is on par with the Fury at 1080p, plus it has 8GB VRAM. I feel like the Fury is just for bragging rights, which I badly want, but I could save a hundred bucks on a 390X. And I could get an MSI Gaming board to match.  :)

The Fury is better at 1080p, and 8gb of vram is pretty wasted at 1080p anyways.  Its your choice though.  Look at some reviews and see if the performance difference is worth the price or not.  I personally think both cards are overkill at 1080p, and would probably just go with a 290x or a GTX 970 and pocket the cash, but that is just my opinion.

At 144Hz, I think they are barely enough. That's just me though. I don't know, the 390X looks really nice though. If the R9 Fury is in stock, which it rarely is, I might pick it up. The Strix cooler does look very nice and it is a top tier card.

if you can get the Fury, buy the fury. It handles tesselation a tad better then Hawaii/Grenada. Which will help you in some games.

And personally, Sapphire Tri-X OC Fury is way more sexy then any 390X ive seen.
