I wanted to get a little more information regarding upgrading components without having to build an all new computer. I will list my computer parts later in the post but I basically want to know if upgrading my GPU is all I need to do or if I need to upgrade my whole rig. I am considering getting a gtx980ti.

AMD phenom II x4 985

8gbs ram 1600 mhz
MSI NF980-g65

WD blue 512 gbs

Corsair pro series AX 850
1gb GTX560ti

What resolution? And are you SOLELY gaming or doing other things?

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

I really only do gaming. I mean like there's web browsing and all that, but nothing I can think of that would require more resources. I am planning on playing on on 2560x1440 though currently I am playing games at 1920x1080. One of the other things I am hoping to upgrade is my monitor.

That cpu is going to bottleneck you pretty hardcore.

You will need to change your CPU (and motherboard) as well. A 980Ti with that CPU will not perform well.

Changing to something like an i5 4460 is a good choice.

See 4 years ago this would have been enough to change my mind, but isn't the big thing with dx12 and new gpus that they are trying to eliminate overhead from other components. Is bottle-necking still a problem?

Look at what happened with Mantle. It was hyped up and hyped up, but was ultimately disappointing. DX12 isn't going to be a massive, massive improvement, and it's certainly not going to make a Phenom II good enough to keep up with a 980Ti.

Even AMD's flagship CPUs bottleneck the 980ti, it's a big issue. There's limits to how much difference an API will make.

EDIT: Also, DX12 will be reliant on game developers as well. It's not going to suddenly turn the GTA IV port into a magical game because it will still use DX11 and the game itself is a shambles. DX12 will provide game developers with the resources and features they need to make better performing games, but it is ultimately down to the game developer to implement proper support. Just look at how long DX11 has been out, and there's still games like Batman AK that run like crap because of bad optimisation and general PC development.

I see, I didn't know that cpus today were having a hard time keeping up, or that mantle was a flop. I know that older games are not going to receive DX12 support, but I don't have a problem with how my machine currently runs older games GTA IV being a good example.  My concern is with the new games that are coming out. I haven't even installed MGS Ground Zeroes of fear of my machine just not being able to play it. Thank you for the information.

This. With an H81 or H97 motherboard
