If I was buying an Ivy Bridge chip Id get 2600k/2700k w/ a nice board.

Id say its worth it, those chips are holding up crazy well and tbh if I were building a system I would probably get one to save some cash and still get near identical performance to most of today's offerings in terms of gaming performance.

No. Shit.

For $240 you can get an ASRock h97 Anniversary and an i5-4460, which would just be better IMO. Much newer parts, and you won't be buying them used

Exactly, OP is wanting to change from FX to the 2550k

it's in the minimum requeirements for GTA V, as for AMD I think it's the FX 8320

Yea but that's a locked chip.

Wouldn't a Overclocked 2550K beat a locked 4460?

Definitely do it ^_^

They go for good prices now and perform like beasts when you start to tinker with clock speeds.

Yeah. I think you'll have a much better experience on the 2550k, especially if you can OC it some.

From what I was reading a 2550k has no i-gpu so it should overclock pretty well.

I'm going to assume overclocking with an Intel cpu is different compared to a FX cpu?

In what way?

Regardless of AMD vs Intel, overclocking is overclocking, all youre doing is playing with voltage and clockspeed.

Would an overclocked GTX 680 beat a reference 960?

Which would you rather have... It's an older, more power hungry architecture with less IPC. And it's used. The performance in games will likely be exactly the same, but you can get newer parts that aren't used for the same price

An i5-2500k would be a good upgrade over an FX-8350, especially if you're getting a Z-series board to overclock on. A stock i5-2500k has performance about on par with an FX-9590, see this post I made in another thread. I'd personally rather buy a new i5-4460 + H97 board though for the 3 years warranty coverage. The i5-4460 should slightly outperform a stock i5-2500k, but would lose to an overclocked i5-2500k.

In the way of the amount voltage needed to keep the overclock stable.

Well the 2550K is going to be new and the motherboard is used unless I find one new in box.

Yes, voltage varies depending on how high you want to overclock, every chip is different.

The ultimate goal is to get the highest overclock you can get with the least amount of voltage.

It's gonna cost more for old hardware, you'll need an overclocking motherboard just to get any performance over an i5-4460, then you'll need an aftermarket cooler to get any kind've decent overclock that would make it worth buying the i5-2500k over the i5-4460

I already have a AIO so I'm not worried about cooling but I will look into it again and see what's worth getting.

I'd say go for it, 2550K is still an awesome chip by todays standards and will hold well by the time Zen comes around the corner

and by the time zen comes around the corner....that 2550K will be about 5 years old....coming up 6.

and you get people that say you need to upgrade your PC every year....
