Hey guys,

I'm planning on building a gaming desktop. It's time to retire my ASUS G73Jw.

The plan is to get a decent desktop that can handle current and future games without breaking much of a sweat.

I'm not really keen on embarking on the 4k boat (at least for now). I'd rather go for a high refresh rate monitor than a 4k one.

In the future I'll probably add another GPU, some extra RAM and a 4k monitor.

My budget is $5000 AUD and I'm basically starting from nothing.

This is what I came up with.

Did I forget anything?

Feel free to comment/propose changes. I'll take all the help I can get.

I would also like some advise about where to buy. I'm living in Brisbane QLD and I don't mind driving for a couple of hours. So if anyone knows a hidden gem where I can buy these components at a better price than umart please let me know. I'm not really keen on getting stuff by mail...

Thanks in advanced, cheers.

@BFonte

Do you really need X99, for only gaming needs i strongly suggest i7 4790k. AU price are expensive, so if you dont use it for rendering, streaming and etc you are "wasting" money.

IF you want i can put you nice z97 build that will be good enough for 4k

The Asus Rampage V is rather expensive no matter where you get it, I'd go with a cheaper mobo personally I'd go with an MSI Gaming 7 mobo.

Edit: If your theme is red and black why is your case white?

Personally for gaming I would just go Z97 since X99 is a waste for gaming.

If you really want X99 get a cheaper motherboard and ram, you could easily save $400 - $500 by doing that.

As far where to buy it in QLD I'm not sure but I got my parts from umart here in Sydney and didn't have any problems with them.

for gaming, i think the i7 4790k is sufficient coupled with a 980 ti. if you're going to buy a 980 ti, you have to play at 1440p. it's a waste otherwise. i added in an rog swift 1440p monitor at 1ms, 144 hertz, with gsync. your ram was also way too expensive. lga 2011 is great, but you don't need it for gaming. with your cpu cooler, i changed it to a h100i gtx. you can overclock your cpu just fine with it. i think all you need for gaming is 8gb of ram. if you were using photoshop etc, than 16gb would be good.

i think your storage was overpriced and excessive. i went with a 256gb ssd with a 2tb hybrid sshd to save some money. the gigabyte card is cheaper than the asus and it performs very well in comparison. you can potentially overclock it to 1500mhz on the core and 4000mhz on the memory. i added in a z97-a asus mobo which is a great product. 8 power phase design. it's all you need. i think your keyboard is excessive, but i didn't change it. i added windows 8.1 as well. overall, this build is cheaper than your other one and will run very well. the seasonic psu is better in comparsion to your corsair one that you had originally picked.

i repeat, do not get a 1080p monitor for this system. the rog swift is absolutely amazing to play on. my good friend owns one. here is a review for the 980 ti gigabyte g1 gaming gpu:

http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-980-ti-g1-gaming-soc-review,1.html

i used the following formula to calculate the system's psu requirements:

[(cpuTdp + gpuTdp) * 2 ] + [(numberOfGpus -1) * gpuTdp]

=676w

this includes room for a cpu and gpu overclock

Like others have said, you don't need X99 if you're just gaming, you can use the money you save going down to Z97 to get a second 980 Ti while staying under 5k.

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/p9VtFT

Since it seemed like you're going for a red and black theme build I swapped out the X99 stuff for Z97 and added in a second 980 Ti. Another major change I did was switch to parts that Umart sell as it looks like your going to go in and pick them up, better to get everything all at once from the same place.

If you think that you'll need all 3TB of space wait until you fill the 2TB drive up 75% and then go and buy another drive, by then HDDs should be cheaper and therefore you'd get better a better deal buying more storage space in the future instead of hoarding it all now when you (probably) don't need it. Although if you do then by all means go ahead and the the 3Tb drive.

So you are basically overspending on stuff that doesn't matter and is flashy like ram and mobo and underspending on really important stuff like monitor.

First of all everyone is right in that you can get a 4790k and achieve the same gaming performance as an 5820k right now. However if you have the money to spend on the 6 core you might as well. It's about 270 extra which IMO is worth it.

So first i changed your mobo to a more cost efficient option. Really no point in overpaying for a mobo.
Second I did the same for your ram. You were paying an extra 150 for only 400mhz of extra frequency.
Third I upgrade your SSD to a more reliable brand (and probably faster too). If you want to spent more money then this is the place I would do it. Switch it out with a 1tb samsung 850 evo.
Likewise western digital is more reliable than seagate.
I don't like ASUS gpus so I put a EVGA in the build instead.
The define r5 is a fine case and you won't regret using it. It's also a lot cheaper than corsair. For the record, the only thing corsair makes that's worth the cost is their AIO coolers, and even those are made by Acetek. Overall Corsair is one of the most expensive rip-off brands and should be stayed away from.
Hence why I changed the PSU to an EVGA 750w. 750w is enough for your CPU and even 2 Titan X's in SLI so it's got plenty of overhead. But if you want to spend more than get a 1000w unit.

Lastly I changed your monitor. Per your request only 2 monitors really suit what you want. The ROG Swift and the Acer Predator. The predator is newer and most people prefer it to the swift.

Monitors are really important as they are your window into your game. Before you were underspending on your monitor. By reallocating your funds your gaming experience will be a lot better with a 27" screen and 1440p.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the feedback.

I've made some changes to my built according to your advise (and to what Umart actually sells) and this what I ended up with: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/xDX9dC

In regards to the CPU and RAM I'd still rather go with the X99 and the 16GB because I do work from time to time on CAD and Photoshop. It's not very often, but it does happen (when I really can't avoid it).

Other than that I tried to follow what you guys said, despite limiting myself to Umart making it a bit hard.

Let me know what you think.

  • get the h100i gtx instead for your cpu cooler. it has pwm fan control and the fans have more static pressure than the h100i. the h100i does not have pwm fan control.

if you have the money, i would get a hybrid sshd instead of the 7200 rpm one

other than that, it looks very good. should perform very very well

here's a review on your psu: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&file=print&reid=377. it got a very good rating

if you need windows 8.1, i would buy the legit version

nice work

i liked it more with a corsair k70 keyboard.

also why are you putting in a seagate hard drive. seagate is one of the least reliable brands. Go with HGST (1st) or Western Digital (2nd).

Gigabyte wind force gpus are unnecessarily large and heavy and sag.

still overspending on your case.
