So my Asus laptop runs at around 40 degrees C at idle and kicks up to 85-90 C while running GTA 5. Should I be worried and is there a solution or should I just keep doing what I do?

Laptop is currently running an Intel i7-4710HQ and a GeForce 840M.

Normal for laptops :)

80-85*C is perfectly normal for a lappy when being pushed to the max. 90*C is slightly warmer than I'd prefer but you also have to factor in Room temperature and the surface it's on. If It's a 27*C room on a bed then it's a miracle it runs that cool.

If it's older than 6 months you could try blowing out some dust if possible. If it's still under warranty don't open it. If it's not, open it up and clean out the heatsink and fan.

EDIT: Is it an RoG laptop or a normal lappy? If RoG, those temps seem high, if normal, they seem pretty much like what I'd expect.

Its not an ROG laptop but it's running on my desk at 27 degrees C ambient. Even though its normal, wouldn't these temps affect the longevity of the CPU and GPU?

Turning it on affects the longevity. I recommend keeping it in the original packaging 24/7 for the maximum useable life.
