Hey guys, I recently had to RMA my 780  and today I found out that EVGA has sent me this 970. Is this an upgrade? I remember paying a lot more for the 780 than this 970 goes for so it has thrown me for a loop. I compared the specs of the 2 cards and it seems like the 780 is more powerful to me but I don't know jack about what these numbers mean so can someone clear this up for me real quick?

I would keep the 970. they are about the same performance wise, but the 970 is newer and has lower power consumption. Aslo, there have been rumors about Nvidia gimping older GPUs.

Don't know why EVGA did this the 780 is faster by a comfortable margin, you should insist on a 980 or money back since like you said you paid more than what the 970 goes for, your 780 shouldn't have failed that quickly

The 970 has more and faster memory, uses less power, supports newer tech and should perform roughly the same, if not better.

Here ya go, some game benchmarks:

The 970 is faster than the 780 at pretty much everything.

Just no... a 780Ti, yes but a plain 780 wasn't that much more powerful than a 770.

970 will give you basically the same performance.. the 780 will beat it in some situations the 970 will win in others (like any cards with similar performance but different architecture)

More and faster ram, cooler, quieter and a stonking overclocker.. Stick to the 970.

Wow, thanks for all the responses guys. I don't know why I didn't just look up benchmarks. I have a follow-up question:

With the 780, I was running 2 monitors. One through DVI-D @ 1920x1080 120 hz and the other through DVI-I at 1680x1050 60 hz. The 970 they've sent has 1 DVI-D, Display Port 1.2 and HDMI. So a) can I run the old DVI monitor through the DVI-D port? and b) Display Port 1.2 can do 120 hz right? If yes, can someone recommend a good one. There seems to be billion to choose from and prices vary quite hugely.
