VRAM vs DX12

I'm sure everyone heard it numerous times that DX12 will have a more efficient VRAM management, but better management doesn't mean less usage

to look at DX12 VRAM usage you 1st would look at MANTLE and how it uses VRAM compared to DX11

last year, when I had a 280X on hand I did some testing with couple of MANTLE games and saw that at 1080p, MANTLE will use ~600MB VRAM more compared to DX11 at the exact same quality settings

very recently AMD has finally launched a Catalyst driver that is capable of handling both DX12 and MANTLE for my HD8670m

now, let's look at how VRAM usage looks like @720p:

(something was wrong with my initial data collection, previous HWinfo recorded way higher numbers for some reason - updated to latest stable version)

that is scary, that should be very scary for all the people running 2GB VRAM cards

but I do see the problem, but DX11,1 will still be an option due to consoles ( I imagine ? )

Maybe game developers make to make more efficient use of it.

 

Don't forget, DX12 is still unreleased.

Also depends on a game and driver optimization.

Heck, I've seen Mantle "optimized" games run better on DX11 on Nvidia hardware.

Just because it uses more memory, does not mean it has to use more memory. It may be that the memory is being reserved, kinda like how system memory is reserved for certain tasks without actually being used.
