Hey guys, I am just finishing a build for my mother, mainly from my old computer. I just got a HD4870 in my hands and my question is, will 400W PSU handle this card?

Rest of the build:

AMD Athlon X2 5600+ 2.9ghz dualcore

2 sticks of DDR2 RAM

DVD-ROM

I used that power supply with old GT9600 and it worked just fine.

My rig: CPU: Intel core i5 4670K MoBo: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming RAM: Kingston HyperX Beast 2x4GB 1600mhz CL9 GPU: EVGA GTX780 SC ACX SSD: ADATA Premier Pro SP900 256GBHDD: Western Digital RED 2TB PSU: FSP Aurum CM 750W Case: Cooler Master HAF XM OS: Windows 8 Pro

Should be fine. Just make sure it's a good quality PSU.

It's probably fairly crap then as it isn't a well known brand. I would swap it out to be on the safe side.  How old is the PSU by the way. Open it up and have a look if you do plan on continuing to use it. Make sure no dust and that plastic isn't beginning to melt on any of the components.

Grab a good Corsair, Antec, etc. PSU. You'll thank yourself when it doesn't blow up all your other components.

A quality 400w PSU would be plenty for a 4870 + Athlon x2 setup. However, your Eurocase is a poorly build unit. Assuming that it is the same, here's a thread at TPU of someone recapping it with better caps: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42234

I would recommend getting a proper PSU for your system. A cheap and inexpensive power supply would be the Corsair CX430v3.

well the hd 4870 almost triple the power consumption of the 9600gt . it uses more W than a hd 7950 actually. will you put a hd 7950 on a crap 400W ? aha... so even if it works, the day will come when it will blow

I would go with at least 500W, the HD 4870's are power hungry cards. I still own a few myself (2x Asus Dark Knight, 1x Reference HIS). Also note they run quite hot even with good (air) cooling, so don't suffocate the PC with your placement.

Ok then, I will look for something better, but i doubt that the card will ever get on some load, because it will be maximally used for watching a video on youtube, it's not like a gaming PC. And I also have a good deal on a GT620, which eats max. 50W, so there shouldn't be a problem when it handled a full load GT9600 which eats around 100W I think.

400w is fine, however I would go with a 500w or 550w since these older cards tend to drain more power.
