Hello, so one of my friends just got back from being on vacation and when he got home his computer stopped working. When you turn on the computer all the lights and fans turn on, you can hear the hard drive and see that the motherboard is on. I have tried taking out the gpu and just trying to run it but that didn't show signal still so I was wondering if this is possibly a dead cpu or something and how to test this.

CPU: i5 somethin bought like 2-3 years ago

If u have a speaker, u can diagnoze it by beeps.

It can be also a dead mobo tho. Speak would help much.

I do not have a speaker but I dont get how it would be a dead mobo if the light is on 0_O

Are you sure it's a mobo/cpu/gpu issue?
It may depend on your ssd... I remeber reading about ssds not working after not beeing used for a long time.

There are many variations of how it's 'dead'. In most cases lights and power are 'on', but it won't post.

Anyways, I would get a speaker and\or try another mobo with this cpu.

GPU: Sapphire 7950

Try the basics first. One stick of RAM at a time, GPU removed, use onboard graphics.

Process of elimination. If your friend didn't unplug the system while they were away the PSU could have been damaged by a surge. Lots of things can happen, especially when no one is looking.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

If there's no beep signal, first try another cpu, my p67 extreme4 scared me, it turned out to be the g520 cpu that's not working.

Well, ask a friend, try the cpu on your mobo.

Did you try resetting the bios?
