Cable Modem Suggestions

Go to solution Solved by d3sl91,

The 6121 you sent will work  until you get service faster than 170/131. Then you will want the 6141.

Motorola/arris is a good brand, and their stuff usually works as expected. I have a friend who has 100/20 comcast and the 6121 with no issues. if you do... amazon returns are easy and you could just exchange.

My family is planning on getting Comcast 105 Mbps Download/20 Mbps Upload.

Which cable modem is best for this kind of connection.  Modems advertise it can handle up to that speed but I would like to clarify before we buy any of these modems. I am worried if the 172 Mbps modem will not be enough for the internet plan.

Err despite whatever different specs it might say, those modems are the same model.

First things first, have you checked with the ISP to see if there is a list of approved modems and/or firmwares? Some ISP's mandate certain specific models, and even specific firmware levels.

Second, that modem is a 4x4 modem (4 channel down, 4 channel up). I would strongly consider looking at a modem that supports higher channel bonding (8x4 or 24x8, etc - such as the Cisco DPC3848). This means that if you upgrade your speed in the future, you won't have to replace your modem again. But the choice is yours of course.
