Changing my cpu

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

I need an SFX power supply because my case is the Silverstone SG05 and it is very small.

this is what you need/want...notice it's a silverstone...i'll never understand why people build such tiny computers when their homes could stack about 6850 standard ATX chassis..

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/silverstone-power-supply-sstsx600g

This is my current setup

Motherboard: ASUS H971-PLUS

Cpu: Intel core i3 4150

Storage: 128gb adata ssd

Graphics: Intel HD graphics 4400

Power supply: 300w

I just bought an Amd r9 270x and I haven't put it in yet because I am waiting on an adapter to come (molex to 6 pin) and I was on amazon and I saw that amazon prime day was coming up. I was wondering

if it would be a better choice (or even a good choice) to buy an i7 4790k and use all of my $350 budget or, buy an i5 4690k and spend the extra money on games? One game I really want to play is GTA V and I don't know if my CPU could handle that. Thanks!

You are not going to be able to power a 270 off of a 300 watt psu you need to get a new different one.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

I3 4150, Intel HD graphics, corsair CX750M, 4gb ram, Asus H81M-E, corsair 230T, Intel stock cooler WD Green 2TB Gigabyte 550TI

Why you shouldn't trust Gpu or Cpu boss Click on this I dare you!

This is my current setup

consider that you will have to get atleast a 550w PSU because you can run that card and CPU (i7 or i5) with a 300w PSU. And about the CPU it depends on what you do ... if you do video editing you better off getting the i7 but other wise just get the r9 270x with an i5 4790K and a new PSU.

Not worth to buy i5/i7 because you only have 270x. If you do productive work then it's worth to consider it.

might not be able to Overclock on that motherboard either and if you do put a 4th gen cpu in there make sure it does not put crazy voltage to your cpu!! ive heard that can happen with z87, dunno about h97

First off:

You can get the i7 for 299 at microcenter if you have one close.

Second you might want to look at the xeons 1231 v3, Its a lil over 200 bucks but if you dont overclock you get i7 performance for an i5 price.

Third see what your monitor can handle with the i3 and the new graphics card. Personally I like to get five years out of a cpu atleast.

Games in the future will be multi-threaded and the number of threads will be important atleast according to people who write code for games.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-future-proofing-your-pc-for-next-gen

Article was written 2 years ago but game development takes up to 4 years and I think it is still relevant.

My wallet says AMD but if it was up to me I would go with the xeon over the i5 in a heartbeat. Overclocking is allot more fun when you dont care if the cpu smokes and sets the MB on fire:)

Hope this helps

I just went on Coolers Master's website and I went on the power supply calculator and it said 318 watts.

Some headroom is always a good idea. It only says 413W for me, but I still use a 650W power supply. If you want to skimp on the power supply, I suppose it's better to get a good-quality 350W unit than a poor-quality 500W one, but really, PSUs are worth every penny, so just get a 450W+ unit from a reputed brand and series.

Would the power supply fit in the Silverstone SG05?

Correct. You cannot overclock on an H chipset. has to be Z.. I suggest to OP to get an i5-4460.

Actually you CAN overclock on an H chipset. Just those ASUS ones. Quote me if im wrong :)

Well yes, I think you are correct (really not sure on this) but I believe you have to run it through a software setup instead of just being able to do it in the BIOS/UEFI like on a Z..
