Gtx 970 models worth getting?

G1 Gaming is imo the best of them all, but the EVGA models, Asus Strix, and some of the MSI models are great as well. (Just not as great)

I have an ASUS Strix 970. They run very quiet and the backplate is very sexy.

Agreed, my friend has the Asus one and it seems to do good. But the G1 is the best, but big.

The Zotac AMP! Extreme edition is what I have and I think it is the best, I haven't went over 65*C on high load for gaming with this while I only have one other fan in my case with it. I think it is the best for gaming, go check out the Tek Syndicate Hardware video for it.

And don't even worry, overclocked the 970 and the 390 trade blows

Get a G1 to overclock it and squeeze all the possible performance out of it.

The other models are good, but they don't match the quality and power delivery of the G1 (except the HoF, but that's expensive as hell)

You can barely overclock the memory now as they switched manufactures of the memory modules.

Yup, Samsung kinda reduced their quality though. Had a 1.0 G1 that overclocked to 8Ghz (4000Mhz) like a champ, now my 1.1 Samsung hits a wall at 3950Mhz

They don't even use samsung anymore according to my knowledge, according to what I have heard it's now the same memory that plagued the 970 strix.

for an alternative to the G1, the one that makes the most sense is the evga ssc or ftw+ which have had power delivery and cooler improvements over the sc and ftw. it isn't quite as good as the g1 in overclocking, but you get EVGA's great warranty and customer service. I've heard good things  about the MSI lightning and Twin Frozer, but I have no experience with them.

Okay OP there have been multiple threads like this where people don't give specifics on their preferences and what they want to do with the card which makes recommendations much harder. For starters, do you plan to overclock, do you plan to water cool, do you care about noise, etc.. I'd ask if you have an atx case or mini itx but now a days that doesn't seem to matter since most cards fit into those cases.

For starters, do you plan to overclock, do you plan to water cool, do you care about noise, etc.. I have an atx case and I plan to overclock it with the air cooler it has attached to it. Just wanna know whether the g1 is really just the best you can get.

As far as overclocking the g1 and msi are at the top of the charts. The msi will be quieter though. My reference card hits 1600/8100 stable so it really more so depends on luck.

About the memory thing. I ordered my 970 G1 gaming about a month ago when people already were seeing non Samsung memory but I still ended up getting Samsung memory.
