I am currently running a gaming server off of my home connection. I have a 50 meg down and 20 meg up connection so I assumed that it was more than enough bandwidth for my server to run with a good amount of people.

However the problem I am running into now is that whenever I get 30+ people connecting the pings spike greatly for each client that connects after. If I ping the server locally it still shows 5-10 ms but connecting will result in 170MS+ depending on how many others there are.

From my limited troubleshooting I have come to the conclusion that it is the router my ISP has supplied that is just not able to do the job well enough, however I don't know where to go from here.

It is a T2200H modem/router and i've tried changing all the settings possible but to no avail. The only solution I can think of is disabling DHCP and then running a more power router or switch that can do the job. Once again I don't know what I should get for this if this is the solution, so I am asking you guys!

Any help is appreciated, thanks for reading

it could be your isp

not the router

and I have a feeling that it actually is the isp

router probably isn't the problem here

however if you want a suggestion

make the modem a dumb modem...bridge it to a new router

for a really good router...

Id suggest the asus ac56u or ac66u

I'd suggest getting a new router. I think it might be that cause those modem/router combos that ISPs give to you are usually atrocious. I'd suggest trying to get a new router and see if that solves the issue (maybe you could borrow a friend's to check that that's actually the issue first before buying a new one). As for routers, ASUS, TP-Link, and Linksys are all pretty reputable companies.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

If I were to bridge to another router wouldn't I run into double DHCP problems to begin with? I can't disable DHCP on the t2200H it seems like so even if I were to bridge and and disable DHCP on the other router wouldn't the problem still be there?

thanks for the router suggestions ill check those out

if you are able to bridge the t22200h..then it turns the modem into just a dumb modem with no routing ability

and just passes everything to the router

I just got mine installed, it's the Actiontec T2200H, I was able to bridge port 1 in the web interface, works great.

Ditto for me. I just upgraded from 15Mbps to 50Mbps (2x25 bonded) in late December and got the bridgeable 2-line Actiontec T2200H (the newer 1-line T1200H is also bridgeable in the GUI). In fact that's the only reason I upgraded from my old ALU modem as I run a Mikrotik router behind it. Bridging is only available on port 1 of the built-in 4 port switch. One interesting tidbit to this is that once you bridge port 1 and plug another router into it, you automatically get 2 public IPs. The Actiontec will always grab a public IP and now the router on port 1 also gets a public IP. The only sucky thing about the T2200H is that Actiontec actually makes a dual-band variant with 256MB RAM/256MB Flash but Telus elected to buy the gimped 2x2 N300 2.4GHz-only variant with half the RAM/Flash (128/128MB). For my usage that doesn't really matter as I'm running a Mikrotik RB2011 behind it but for those who actually use the Actiontec as their main router/wifi it might make a difference.

oh that is wicked, I didn't think the router would be that smart for bridging good to know!

Any idea what aspect of the telus router might be causing the issue? So when I do research on a new router I am not accidentally gimping myself. I was looking at the Mikrotik one and am considering that but any other suggestions would be great.

maybe ram or cpu

for the router

you probably want atleast a dual core with 128mb or ram or more

depends on your budget for the new router

after some digging and such I've found something with the closest specs to some of the routers recommended http://www.amazon.ca/D-Link-Wireless-AC1900-Gigabit-DIR-880L/dp/B00J8NCVX4

think it will do the job? I know its no 1000$ datacenter router but I would hope this thing could handle 100 connections or so :(
