amd 7870 vs nvidia 780

So my friend and I have recently build two different computer systems with simular specs.

I'm running an MSI R7870 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC (I haven't tinkered with it) and my friend has a Nvidia GTX 780 (not sure which).

 

When looking at the prices one can clearly tell that his card outperforms mine a lot.
But when we're gaming for a few hours (Saint Row The Third on max settings) his card runs at 80°C and mine only at 60°C.
 

I think it's worth mentioning that I have a generally better case cooling and a completely dust free system while his case has no dustfilters and a bit of dust already.
 

 

So my card stays cooler when performing the same, does that mean I can outperform his card if we set a temperature limit of 90°C?

You can hit higher frequencies, but you won't beat him.

Nope, 780 is way more powerful card than 7870
And i am not sure that does 7870 have boost, if not you will not get extra FPS by setting temp. limit to 90.

The GTX 780 uses GPU boost 2.0, basically it clocks the card in accordance to a number of factors including temp. So while it reaches 80 C, it'll actively make adjustments to not go higher than that temp threshold while attempting max performance.

 

I doubt the 7870 could top the 780 though.

It's supposed to be yes....but judging by the results, one could say this scenario is bit different.

Maybe if you have 4-5 of them in crossfire.

GTX780 is way out of 7870 league. Probably need 2.5jigahertz core clock to be on par with 780 which is impossible to achieve. :P
