Hi everyone! my 5.1 DVD player control unit just died, it wasn't wery good since the start but I only used it for the Surround and speaker controls while using my computer (Optical audio cable). and now it finally died. I needed a replacement, so what's the big deal you might ask, just get a new one and plug in your speakers! sadly I can't.

All the speaker wires are plugged naked (just a spring to held them) into the SubWoofer Unit. where it has welded what looks like some sort of propietary cable which it goes into my Control Unit and then I can change the volume from there.

the setup is this: http://i.imgur.com/K1a4Ya1.png

is a common cable in the Audio systems?

can I find just a control unit replacement without having to buy an entire system again? (or the same model, because it was s**t)

if not,

How can I find a good Control unit + SubWoofer with the same "naked wires" ports? (so I don't have to pass again all the cables around my desk and walls and to buy new speakers)

(on amazon I find some nice small control units but they don't have the same audio plugs and I'd still miss the subwoofer cable)

Thats stupid.

I would get a receiver, and plug the speakers into that.

Does your sub have any other inputs on it?

that control unit was always crappy, I couldn't use the volume wheel or it shut off, I had to use the remote, switching from audio sources took ages and sometimes it just shut off by itself.

the same model is around 70-80€ on ebay, even the remote is 50€ wtf!

if I can find something good and wire-compatible for under 100-90€ and long lasting I'd prefer to switch then.

my hope was into some other cheaper units of other brands with that same cable port for the SW

Another question, since it seems I have to give away my Control unit and my subwoofer, if I buy a Digital/Optical to Analog decoder like this one: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71UQUBIcDHL._SL1200_.jpg

will I still be able to have the same level of volume from my system? (I guess the Subwoofer had a bigger tranformer inside.. but I'm not expert in the audio field :( )

also I will need RCA cables to plug my speakers? I've seen a lot of audio cables and they all have the same circle shape with the pin at the center, and some are called "Subwoofer coaxial" other just RCA and a lot of different names, bummer.

I just don't want to buy meters and meters of RCA cables before finding out they are the wrong type, also I already have metere of this transparent speaker wires and most of it it's still tangled to save on lenght. so maybe I should just buy the single male-end of the RCA and solder them on? (to save on money and re-arrangment of the new cables all around the room)

You're pretty much out of luck without heavy modification. :-/

mhn, since the sub is useless I wantet to try to open it and figuring out if I could somehow work around that stupid cable but I don't want to mess around 220v or live wires, so I guess I'll have to buy that converter and a new sub, but they only sell them with some speakers, and so I'll have to buy some cheap ones @__@

I don't want to mess around 220v or live wires,

So just unplug the sub from the wall outlet. DUH! :P

The hard part would be figuring out which wires are for each channel (speaker), and just hoping they're accessible for soldering.
