Turning my 8350 build into an editing rig. Wast going to sell my two 290X's which is overkill for it anyways and get a decent FirePro. The problem is I've never really dealt with workstation GPU's and figure this is the perfect time to learn all about them and what specs matter most for their typical jobs.

What are you doing that REQUIRES a WorkStation GPU?

Just saying a 390/970 or better is fine for editing

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

I work for a contracting company and use a good bit of CAD software. I also render about 30-40gbs of video per day. I've gotten by on gaming cards but I really think it's time to get something made for the job.

Video editing does not necessarily require a workstation card. Your 290Xs should be fine

Lol this is a lot more editing than just personal use.

Then get a TitanX

Because he had a hard drive.

Have you looked into more CPU power for editing?

Yes I have and will evetually upgrade but a better mobo and CPU for the job will cost more than trading my gaming GPU's for a decent workstation one. The 8350 seems to be handling the workload fine atm anyways. I'm also open to nVidia WS cards...I've just heard that FirePro is uaually the way to go but I really don't know much about WS cards as it is.

Titan x is not an workstation card....

No Maxwell card is yet (although a Maxwell Quattro is in the works).

When you upgrade your CPU and want to get something extreme I would suggest getting a dual 2011-3 Xeon setup and not a 5960X.

W7100 is the best price to performance one as far as i understand. Albeit the real "price to performance monster" is the W8100. But it is quite a bit more expensive.

Quad opteron man.... for when two massive server CPUs just doesnt cut it.

I used to think opterons where good then I realized they were just 2 FX processors smashed together and clocked just over 2ghz. My brain was like so it's like 2 FX CPU's at half the speed but costs 4 times as much, that math does not not sound right.

yeh, but they got all dem cores man (and given price of basic FX, their still cheaper then XEON)... i think i saw the 16 core ones at a reasonable 600 USD or so... which isnt terrible... now getting 4 of those for a total of 64 cores thats beastly man

You can get a 16 threaded Xeon that is clocked at 2.4 that turbos to 3.2 for 600$ and pair 2 of them together.

Thats the same as comparing a 4790K to a FX-8320 except in this case there price is identical.

It's a combo with Gaming GPU

No it isn't. The titan x is gaming only. It still has the abhorrent 1/32 dp computer performance.

Just get a titan x and get a i7 4790k or i7 5820k then you'll be set to do editing Linus and them use titan x and 5930k/5960x so you'll be fine with a titan x and 5820k

In computation compute power using OpenCL, OP's dual 290X's beat a Titan X by a fair margin, just because Linus does it dont mean its a good idea.

op's not gonna get a titan x + new mobo + 4790k/5820k for the price 2 290x's mate, he said he's going to buy the new card from selling the 2 290x's
