Hey guys, I was wondering if this is normal behavior for this cpu. I just got a used intel i7 3770k and put it on my Gigabyte Z77M-D3H. So it seems to be working fine although when i stress test it using prime95 every few seconds it goes from 4.2ghz to 1.6ghz. I know that intel has speed step but shouldnt it not be happening while the CPU is on full load? Would appreciate insight on this.

Temps:

Idle : 32

Load : 85 Max

Heres a screenshot if it will help

Prime 95 is an unrealistic load, try occt or aida and see if the problem persists. It could be throttling

Although, before i maxed out the fans, it was reaching 100 degrees. it only throttled when it reached 105? i doubt the i7 throttles at 85 degrees. Ive seen my friends processors run at higher temperatures. Also, ive used prime 95 on my sandybridge i5, doesnt seem to act this way. Odd..

Yes, but on anything after Sandy Bridge, Prime 95 overvolts the processor, therefore makes the CPU run hotter than it is supposed to. Stop using it before you do any permanent damage to your processor. Try Aida64 or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Both are excellent stability testing programs.

PS: If your friends' processors run hotter than 85C, then they are doing something wrong...

Prime only did that if Adaptive/Auto voltage was on. And from what I've seen so far they fixed the issue a long time ago.

Well, a few things to note i guess is that we live in a tropical country where at times the ambient temp of the room reaches 40 deg.

My friends using a 3770k running at 4.5ghz, maybe thats why he reaches over 100. But despite reaching those temps, his doesnt seem to throttle (if that is whats happening) like mine which only gets to around 83 deg.

Some motherboards allow to change temperature at which CPU throttles, but it's dumb to do so ( by raising that temperature ).

P95 runs in sequences. At the end of every successful iteration it is likely the CPU usage will drop, then load up once the next iteration has begun. You can watch the readouts in P95 and correlate them to CPU usage, although task manager in 8.1 has never been known to be the most accurate thing in the world.

Although, when i use other computers, it doesnt act the same way, which is odd.

Here are some images on how it acts on aida64
