So I've posted on here before with a preliminary workstation build, but I've gone back and heavily revised it. If you want all the details on why I feel the need to build this thing you can go check out my original post here, but basically I want something that can handle serious multithreaded workloads in Premiere and After Effects as well as game-streaming at 1440p or higher. I also plan to do some light 3D modeling in Blender, I've been playing around with the latest build and I'm really enjoying it, but render times on my old failbook are as insane as you'd expect.

The main thing I'd like some feedback on is whether I've got sufficient overhead on my power supply to comfortably play around with overclocks on the CPU and GPU. I'd also be very interested in hearing some monitor and peripheral suggestions.

All this is getting thrown in a Fractal Design R5 because I didn't know the NZXT H630 was a thing until I saw Austin Evans' Neutron build, so I've already purchased the case. I'm more than a little butthurt over that.

+1 @LiamApex

The psu has more than enough capacity for the build, cpu & gpu overclocking, and aging.

If it can fit in the budget, a more powerful gpu would improve editing/rendering performance.

Yeah the 970 is only in there as a placeholder really. Am I just being an idiot and there's an easy workaround so I can do without a GPU until I can afford a 980 ti?

Get an x99S SLI Plus (it's like $160 and it does not impact the PC at all) and do not get the NEX, Get an XFX or Seasonic PSU.

Yeah I like the look of that MSI board, solid Japanese capacitors always a plus. Would the lack of heatsinks on the RAM be problematic for overclocking? I don't really have any experience to go on.

I think if I were to drop $250 on an SSD I'd just spring for a bigger Sata drive instead of going the M.2 route. Even for that Kingston drive the read speed is really impressive, but the write speed is basically what you get with any higher end Sata SSD. I guess the read speed bump would probably benefit me a lot when scrubbing through timelines though.

I don't plan on making the jump to team red unless I'm getting a Sapphire card with 8gigs of ram, I have an nvidia shield and I'd like to stream to it for couch gaming.

DDR4 is much more power efficient and no you will be fine without heatsinks as ram temperature is not affected by cpu overclocking.

Is there a reason why you'd suggest those brands over the EVGA? I mean the NEX is definitely cheap enough for me to be a little suspicious, but 65 bucks is hard to pass up for a gold certified, 650W, fully modular PSU.

And those capacitors are Japanese which means they'll cap better right?

I had one and it was so loud - even in my R4

That's interesting, I've heard the performance gains for overclocking RAM are pretty minimal, but I still wanted to give it a shot just for fun.

Do you know if MSI's bios is decent for overclocking and controlling fanspeed? That was sort of the rationale behind picking an Asus board in the first place. I know it's kind of crap on my brother's Gigabyte board.

Not really. If you want to game you will need a bit of gpu power. GTX 970 seems like a reasonable choice.

The EVGA 650GS is made by seasonic and costs the same as the supernova.

With two 1x8GB memory kits the system will at best, run dual channel. But even that is not certain. Nor is there any guaranty that the memory will run at its advertised speed. Buy a 4x4GB memory kit to assure quad channel operation at the kit's advertised speed and timings.

Why an 850 Pro ssd? The real world performance difference between the 850 EVO and 850 Pro is marginal. For ~$20 more you can get Samsung MZ-75E500B/AM. Or get Samsung MZ-75E250B/AM and put the savings into a quad channel memory kit.

What do you expect to do with such a low end gpu?

GPU is just a placeholder, I really want to get a Strix 980 ti or something eventually, but for now this will let me plug into a monitor so I can get some work done and save up to actually purchase something worthy.

I actually meant to swap out the 850 pro for an evo after I read your first comment, just forgot when I went back to revise the list.

Swapping the drive out brings me down to $860 for my baseline, I might actually get to start building soon, okay now I'm excited.

So I totally forgot my ex-roommate who just up and left without taking his stuff has a crappy old computer with a Radeon 5770 in it, I can just use that until I've saved up enough for a 980 ti.

My long term goal for this thing is to do a custom water cooling loop with a 360mm radiator in the top, dual 980tis with water-blocks, but that's obviously way in the future.
