21:9 Gaming

spyder

I want to make the jump to the LG 29UM65 which supports resolution of 2560 x 1080 in the 21:9 format. Aside from the sexy ultrawide screen here are my questions:

1. Is my GPU good for this resolution? (GTX 970 Strix)

2. Do all PC titles support this resolution? Would hate to play with borders or stretched out

Your gpu is fine, just don't expect a solid 60 maxed out.

not all titles support it. skyrim, spore, terraria (although a hack is availible for terraria) to name a few.

neither of those are recent titles

1. Yes, your gpu will be fine, keep in mind that there is a 30% performance hit from normal 16:9 1080p gaming so you might need to downgrade some options.

2. Yup, some with some slight bug but I didn't encounter ones that completely hated the 21:9 format. Also check out wsgf.com, it has a list and rankings of all the games that support/ don't support and how well they support the ultrawide format

Longboarders/ skaters message me!

Most games should run fine with a GTX 970 at that resolution, if not necessarily all at max settings.

I wouldn't say *all* titles support it, especially older ones. Worst-case scenario, some games might need to run letterboxed for 1080p. Most newer ones should be fine. Check PC Gaming Wiki to see how well supported 2560x1080 is in whatever game you like. If work-arounds are needed, they're usually explained there as well.

I prefer to game on my ultrawide 1080p over my 1440p monitor. Also Skyrim will work after editing the .ini file. I have even gotten fallout 3 to work with it.

From my experience the cutscenes and the title screen will always be 16:9 since that is how they are hardcoded.

When you start playing on 21:9, you`ll realize that it does not even matter if a few shitty games are badly supported....  you`ll never give up 21:9, and you`ll rather skip the games that cant be fixed or dont have support (of which there are very few)

Also, please dont get the 29um65, get the 29um67. It costs THE SAME, but is 75hz instead of 60hz. That alone is a win.

I dont know about used. But this is the list of worthwhile widescreens i keep updated for myself:

LG 29um67 - 29inch, IPS, 2560x1080, 75hz, freesync
LG 34um67 - 34inch, IPS, 2560x1080, 75hz, freesync

Acer z35 - 35inch, VA, 2560x1080, 144hz, gsync
Benq xr3501 - 35inch, VA, 2560x1080, 144hz, no-sync

Asus pg34q - 34inch, IPS, 3440x1440, 75hz, gsync
Acer x34 - 34inch, IPS, 3440x1440, 75hz OR 100hz, gsync

If pixel density  of a 27"16:9 1080p monitor doesnt bother you, then the 34um67 is 550$.

I'm on Ultrawide for a year almost now and I'm happy with the experience so far ..

Most of Indie games don't support ultrawide, but most of big titles do support ... Witcher 3 in particular supports it very beautifully ..
