Is it possible that since I removed the expansion slot covers near the GPU to increase it's ability to exhaust hot air I am hearing the HDD's slight buzz when I have my ear close to the PSU exhaust?

yes, its possible that if you remove a piece of metal it wont block sound anymore

Uhm, did you hear the buzz before? Can you feel case resonating? Is this all problem to you? Small metal pieces don't really prevent sound waves from moving. They rather change direction of movement. So if buzzing has started after you removed the piece, its most likely just case resonance. With that, you remove piece which makes everything stable -> you make it resonate more.

Btw, how do you know its HDD making noise when listening close to PSU? Isn't it more probable that PSU is causing coil whine?
