Overvolting - Should I do it?

JebKerman

I've been running my FTW+ 970 at it's stock voltage and have got to ~1430MHz on the core, and 7450MHz on the memory, flawlessly stable. kinda wondering if I could push it.

1. Is there any danger to overvolting with a software utility (I've heard they limit themselves)?

2. What is the limit you can/should overvolt to (the card apparently draws 1.215V by default)?

3. what is the difference between the 3 overvolting modes offered by PrecisionX (Overvoltage, Overboost, and Kboost, 1st and 3rd in particular, second apparently is not supported)

Regarding temps:

Sits around at 61°C on idle after a while of use (possibly partially due to heat rising off the PSU, the 0rpm fan mode keeps it quite warm to the touch)

Under load the temps rise to 79°C but it just sits there, no matter the load (not throttling either).

Wait your hitting 79c at stock voltage, I wouldn't even do it then.

It's more the fact that it literally caps out at that with very little noise, the default fan curve is extremely steep, fan doesn't even start spinning till 60°C

1: it relatively safe , as the card will max out at 1250mv due to a physical hardware limitation* (but there is always a risk )

2: as mentioned above its about 1.250v *

3: overvolt will alow you to add more voltage in small increments , over-boost does the same however allows even more for extreme overclocking , and k boost run the card at its max voltage and max boost speed constant no mater the load

temp wise , you should not overclock more , or better cool everything

* can be bypassed to a higher voltage with bios mods and hardware mods

I know that but still the temps are pretty high set the fan curve a little more agressive then you should be fine.
