Information for Aspiring Newbies

Help!  I have no idea what to look for while monitor shopping.  I am someone who has just recently began getting into building my own PC and I would love any sort of information on what aspects I might need/want on a new monitor.  I'm building a PC mostly geared towards gaming while still allowing me the option of doing slightly more complicated projects in the future.  Any advice on how to choose a good monitor at a decent price would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to keep it around or under $1,500.

 

And advice on parts/compatibility issues would also help.
