1080p 60hz, 1 monitor.

If you stay away from high/ultra textures then sure. Plenty of current games will rin on 2GB VRAM with decent quality settings, but the newer AAA titles are really starting to push the VRAM requirements hard, so if you can dial back the textures then 2GB will be OK but if you can afford a 4GB variant then look at that.

depends on card. if the card has a 2 or 4 gig option, it's usually a waste to get the 4 gig option,

If you plan on applying any sort of AA or using high+ options in textures, you will run out of VRAM.

Pretty much a 970 or 290 and above is going to have > 2gb ram.

If the 4gb model is only like $30 more then I would go ahead and get it anyways.  Some titles see up to a 10% boost in frame rates (gtx 960 2gb vs 4gb).

960 or 280/280X/285 is pretty much all you'll need for 1080p gaming.

If the price difference is small, then more is always better. Saves you from struggling with that one off game you really wanted to play but sucks memory like chrome for no good reason.

Have to say DX12 brings a new feature called tiled resources, which what does is to able to fill much higher quality and more textures in the same space of memory.

This video is the full explanation of Tiled Resources, and it shows a 3GB textures planet using only 16MB.

Tons of vram might be kinda useless is the upcoming next gen games.

Build: CPU: Intel i5 4690k OC = 4.4Ghz | GPU: Gigabyte R9 285 OC = 1100/1575MHz | MB: MSI Z97M Gaming | RAM: Corsair 8GB 2133MHz CL9 | Storage: Crucial MX100 512GB Cooler: Thermaltake Frio Silent 14 | CaseCooltek U3 | PSU: Corsair RM550 | MonitorDell UltraSharp 2414h | Keyboard: Steelseries 6gv2 | Mouse: Corsair M95

FireStrike score = 7803. Graphic score = 9363 (record single r9 285).
