980ti 1680x1050

Go to solution Solved by zkt72,

So, I'm debating between several builds right now.

I'm currently running a 1680x1050 monitor, and don't plan on upgrading soon, though I would like to move up to 144hz 1080p sometime. (I currently have to run most games at 800x600 anyway so just being able to play at full res will be eye candy)

I do a lot of video editing and 3d rendering, so I am wondering if I should go for a 980ti for the CUDA performance, or if I should get something like a 970, and add a nice ssd and maybe some more ram.

Is it best to get the best GPU you can afford now, or get a mid-range gpu and upgrade when necessary? How long could I get away with using a 980 ti at my low res when gaming? Also, rendering doesn't really get more demanding as time goes on, so if a 980ti handles whatever I throw at it now, is there no reason to upgrade later on purely for rendering performance?

Final question:

If at some point a mid range gpu outperforms a 980ti in gaming, Is it possible to put them both in a system and just use the 980ti for cuda and game on the other?

Sorry if this is messy or incoherent, I think I know the answers to these questions, but I just woke up and had the urge to ask these questions.

:( comma use- I'm still half asleep

And you can switch between the Tesla and 980 ti when gaming or not and use the 980 ti for CUDA acceleration

980ti at 1680x1050 is overkill.

Still, you could get one then a 4k display down the road.

i5 4670k @ 4.2GHz (Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo); ASrock Z87 EXTREME4; 8GB Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3 RAM @ 2133MHz; Asus DirectCU GTX 560; Super Flower Golden King 550 Platinum PSU;1TB Seagate Barracuda;Corsair 200r case.

Get high end cards, they tend to last you a long time. For video editing and content creation I seriously recommend to through atleast one Tesla k4000 and a 10 bit monitor (maybe 1440p if you can afford a 10 bit monitor of that resolution)

over 9000 stream cores
