Hello LTT Community,

Our old home PC's ram has been active up and im planning on buying a new one.

This PC is old so i was checking out its specification when i noticed something about its RAM

Dual channel DDR3 1600(IVB)/1333/1066 x 2 DIMMs, Max.16 GB

My mother board is this http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ProductDetail.aspx?T=motherboard&U=en-us0000525

I know my old ram is DDR3 1333. But ive been hearing that 1333 is close to the end of its shelf life.

So im thinking of buying a 1600 DDR3 Ram but i dont understand what the IVB stand for.

end of it's shelf life? where did you hear that from?

by self life you mean it's not being sold anymore? that's what that normally means.

do not buy more RAM unless you just need more. all DDR3 is going to be phased out in the next 2 years as DDR4 comes in.

that does not mean DDR3 is going to break and die. it just means it will no longer be manufactured and when everyone buys it up it will no longer be sold.

don't buy any more RAM unless you just need more, and don't toss out your old RAM for any reason. self life has nothing to do with product usefulness or longevity.

and follow your topic.

and how is your RAM acting up? describe this issue.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

By acting up i mean instead of getting 4gigs it only see's the other ram(2gig) ive try'd swapping it changing the slots etc.

both of the slots work but the other ram just wont read(for a lack of way to describe it). The motherboard only has 2 slots.

because of my mother and some needs of my sister(she plays games as well >.>) 8 gigs should be enough.

P.S.

its ok.. I keep checking my post in the forums i visit by bookmarking them ^_^

P.P.S about the 1333 end of shelf life. I mean ive heard people say that 1333 isnt enough or isnt fast enough anymore.. that's what i mean xD i didnt mean DDR3 its going away fast. soon maybe.

So im thinking of buying a 1600 DDR3 Ram but i dont understand what the IVB stand for.

IVB stands for Ivy Bridge series of Intel CPUs, i.e. the 3000 series of processors from Intel. They have stepped up from the 1333MHz that was used in Sandy Bridge to 1600MHz in Ivy Bridge as standard.

Hope this helps!

Ohh. So i need an Ivy brind compliant CPU to take advantage of the 1600mhz RAm's?

update after some digging around ive found some solutions ^_^. since the CPU isnt an ivy CPU( my cpu is an i3 - 2100. its so old xD) i need to buy a DDR3 1333 ram for it. is that the general answer?

yes. buy two 4GB 1333 sticks or two 8GB 1333 sticks.

shelf life doesnt mean what you think it means, but hey, learn something new everyday!

thanks for watching your threads :P

take one ram stick out and boot to see if you can find one of the bad sticks. one of them is dead.

Yup, if you want to stick to standard speeds. Of course you can overclock the RAM to run at 1600MHz without an Ivy Bridge Series CPU, but that's a totally different story. If you do end up getting an Ivy Bridge CPU, make sure to set the speed of the RAM to 1600MHz or check if it is already running at that speed. My motherboard defaults to 1333MHz when both my RAM and CPU support 1600MHz (I own an Ivy Bridge CPU), so just putting it out there :) .

EDIT: I don't know if your motherboard supports RAM overclocking, so you have to check.

yeah ive found the one ram that was broken and ive removed it.. so far to say it hurts so much doing something when yu only have 2gigs of ram running xD

yeah i dont think this motherboard supports overclocking. but hey, this pc is just for home use, its not gonna run the latest games or anything xD just AutoCAD and dota2. Should still be fine for 2yrs xD

that's be fine if you ran xp.

but i run win7 and idle at 4.3-4.5 GB.... 2GB would cripple my computer.
