As what was discussed in the live steam not too long ago, "Lew", the guest for today's WAN show, in my opinion, completely discredited the Ubuntu Edge.

Comparing it to Samsung, of which has a business model of such that is one where "extreme" advertising campaigns drive sales of their products to one which is community based/open source. Most of what Samsung produces isn't really good apart from all the hype they generate, through their over the top marketing campaigns. That is why, as he mentioned, what they spend in marketing dwarfs that of most other manufactures combined.

The mobile version of Ubuntu, is much similar to that of the desktop version. The only difference I see, is that you'd be able to get a more fluid experience. I have it running on my nexus 7.

What the Ubuntu Edge seeks to deliver, is PC/netbook like performance at an affordable price point which is truly.

With 4gb of RAM, it is safe to assume that they've already been in talks with AMD or other SoC manufacturers who would be rolling out their 64 bit ARM SoCs.

For $600-800 you'd be lucky to get a netbook of equivalent specs. Considering the specs from the proposed Edge, anyone with a few hundred dollars laying around would definitely take full advantage of the proposed situation. Well I did.

From 2010 - 2013, smartphones have grown from a whooping 32GB in 2010(iphone 4) to a spectacular 64GB(samsung S4) in storage. Wow, after 3 years, phones in the high end segment have only doubled in internal storage capacity.

So considering that you'd also be able to run Android, which is a linux derivative, wouldn't it be awesome for you to finally be able to run a full linux OS on your phone. You'd have full access to productivity tools and connect it to a monitor and be set when you're on the move and not be just limited by android.

We'll see, Canonical has been building up to it's mainstream launch of it's mobile OS for a little over 8 mths to a year. They may not have the hardware expertise, but surely enough all the great tech companies that have ever been around, have never been hardware manufactures, they've always been about the software, and define themselves as software companies., eg. Microsoft, Apple, Google, IBM. They've produced hardware as a bi-product of software development.

We'll see, will this be another failed project? My wager would be placed for Canonical.

What do you think ?

IMHO, the Edge and this campaign to make it is basically Canonical saying "Hey guys, we've been working on this super awesome software for a while now, and we'd really love to make it known to more people, which would get the software into a larger market at a faster pace, so on and so forth. We're going to need your help doing this, and here's what you can do to help us help you. We've set up a campaign that will hopefully launch the first piece of hardware that ship with Ubuntu touch though one of our partners may beat us to the punch, and this campaign is our way of reaching our goal to make Ubuntu touch known to the world, and isn't us trying to be competitive with Smartphone manufacturers; in fact, we're working along side them to help design and build this phone, your phone. No matter if we reach our goal or not, this will be a major thing for you, the people of the world, as more developers, consumers, and manufacturers will be aware of what we have to offer. Hopefully many of you will have the ability choice a of being able to put a fully Ubuntu Touch ready device in your pocket within the next year."

Well like Linux, it's a niche product. If you have no computer literacy, there wouldn't be a need to be on Ubuntu. Canonical just wants to demonstrate that it is possible to implement great hardware with even better software at a low cost.

Well $32 million, is a large target for crowd funding, but if they can secure $32 million of sales for their phones, i'm sure that they'll be able to reach that given their FMF which is at about $33.6 million."
