Which is better

GTX 970 or an R9 290?

Any other GPU that I should be considering around this price?

Honestly. The cheapest, both of these cards trade blows with each other, either of them would be very good.

Neither choice is necessarily better, they are pretty similar with slight differences in certain areas. I guess it would depend if you prefer nvidia or AMD, and could also come down to if you have a AMD/Nvidia supported monitor

You can't go wrong with either to tell you the truth. I was wondering the same thing when building my PC. Went with the 970, here's why: 1st I was going to play Single player games such as Assassin's Creed, Batman, The Witcher 3, Watch Dogs and etc, and in those games the 970 performed better. I generally play games like that, and they are usually released by developers who favor Nvidia over AMD. So, just watch a few benchmarks on the games you are going to play and decide for yourself, think if the extra money is worth it going with 970 or vice versa and keep in mind that GTX 970 is really with 3.5GB Vram not with 4GB. And again, you can't go wrong with either.

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600, MOBO: MSI Tomahawk B450, RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 3000 (2x8 GB), GPU: MSI RTX 2080 Gaming-X Trio, CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S, PSU: Corsair RM 650, HDD: WD Blue 1TB, SSD: Samsung 860 ECO 500GB, CASE: Fractal Design Meshify C
