GPU for around 400 USD?

Assassin

So I am planning to get a single GPU for around USD 400. What are my options? How good is the 390x at this range? I'm looking at mostly 1440p.

390X is decent if you want higher resolution than 1080p. 290X or 970 is also good :)

Well is the 100 USD more worth it for the 390x? There seems to be 7-10 frames difference at most.

go with a used 980 off eBay. They are selling for about 400 USD.

1440p is pretty demanding. With a good OC on a 980 it can hit the same performance as stock 980 TI.

Your playing at 1920X1200 so I would say no. Just go with a 290X.

I'm planning to get a 1440p monitor.

Than yes, a 390 or 390X would be good. The extra VRAM will allow for really high settings with no hassles.

970 is a good option. (Just be sure to turn down the AA as it doesn't need to be at 8x when running at 1440p, more like 4x or 2x.)

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

do you want to play games like GTA V and Witcher 3 at 1440p or games like CS;GO?

If its the former dont even bother considering anything weaker than a 980. GTX 970 is completely out of the picture.

390X retails for the  same price as used GTX 980 on eBay except it's weaker. (especially when overclocked)

290X would make a decent budget 1440p card  depending on the price.

The 390x is pretty much on par with the 980 and being $100 less with 4GB more vram. The 390x is a more refined version of the 290x ;)

980 OCs yielding about 20% more performance or in other words about the same performance as a stock 980 Ti, 390X can't touch tat.

Ya know... 390x when overclocked gets about the same performance of a overclocked 980...

I was very unhappy with my gaming experience when I had one 980 at 1440P, so I wouldn't recommend a 970 for that resolution.

I don't think the 390x has much oc headroom maybe 8-10% from the reviews I've seen, so I don't think it can match an oc'd 980 in resolutions less then 4k, but could get pretty close for less money.

I would just save another $150-$200 off your budget and get a 980 Ti.  would get the Gigabyte 980 Ti G1 Gaming when it comes back in stock.

AMD cards get more fps per clock than Maxwell. Even though their numbers are not impressive. They gain the same amount of FPS...

if you look at LTT's 3dmark benchmarks, you'll find the 290x with a lower clock speed than the 970 but yet their scores are pretty close ;)
