So at the beginning of the year, literally on new years day, I upgraded my 7 year old computer to something more modern.

I went from a 2.13 gig core 2 duo with 6 gigs of ram to a AIO water cooled 5820k with 8 gigs of ram (now 16).

Got a new case, NZXT phantom 530, and even upgraded my boot drive to a 240gig  SSD.

So needless to say I was long overdue and the new setup is a godsend compared to my tired old rig.

However, there are still two dated components I need to upgrade to fully bring my system into the modern era.

My graphics card, a GTX 560, and my monitor a Samsung 940 bw

For the display I settled on 1440p, most likely in the 27" size range, though I haven't settled on ultra wide, curved or any other features.  But whatever I choose will be my daily driver for many years to come.

The graphics card I am leaning toward the 980ti,or the Fury X depending on how it performs down the road.

So the dilemma I am faced with is what do I buy first.  Given I'll only have the funds to purchase either a graphics card OR a display this year it makes it a bit hard to choose.

Part of me is leaning toward the display as the first choice as not only would it provide a literal visually appealing upgrade that may wet my upgrade appetite for a while.

Also while the graphics cards that were put out this year are pretty decent, but if I wait until next year the ones released will be as good if not better.

My budget for either a card or a display is basically not more than a single 980ti/Fury x.  I have a lot of household upgrades that need done and I have put a moratorium on the "fun stuff". Which means no more firearms :( and limited computer stuff.

A bit of a long winded post, I apologize, but I am curious as to what the community's thoughts are on this.

Card first. I'm in the same situation, I have my system all ready and I'm still using my 7770's. If you get a 1440p display before a GPU that can run it, you aren't going to enjoy the display. If, however, you get a GPU first, you can have fun on your current display with high FPS and on your next one. That's what I'll be doing and I strongly suggest you do the same :)

A working freesync/gsync loop is what you should aim at, if you care about you gaming at all.

Anyone who has been in this game for a while knows that you buy the best monitor you can first and then you worry about the rest of the stuff.

A budget for your monitor would be nice to know. But i have a feeling money isnt entirely irrelevant to you and therefore you probably want a freesync monitor like lg34um67 and a 290 video card (really there is no point in wasting more money than that)

understandable about the graphics card

and with Gsync and Freesync still new-ish technologies that arent widespread it would make since to get a good card and then wait.

the monitor budget is roughly $700 which is what my graphics card budget is.
