What's the 4790k equivalent without an iGPU? I'm building my Dad a computer soon and he doesn't need an iGPU at all, it would be nice to save some money and get the Xeon equivalent

E3 1231-v3.

EDIT: After a quick check, the Xeon will be weaker in per core performance when compared to the i7, as it is clocked lower. What will your dad will be using it for? It may be better to provide us with that so that we can actually give you a better opinion.

Why does the E3-1271 V3 cost the same as the 4790k? is there any reason at all to buy it over the 4790k?

Just get the E3-1231 V3.  The small difference in frequency won't make much difference.  It is really good for the price.

It costs the same as the i7

no reason. just theoretically more stable. that being said, Intel core-i cpus are pretty stable as well.

just get the 4790k or the e3 1231 v3 if you dont need the overclock

Let me remind you that I said the 1231 v3, not the 1271 v3.

For starters, the i7 would be clocked higher then both the 1231 and the 1271. The i7 also has the iGPU, which the Xeons do not have.

The reason to buy the 1231 is because it is a 100$ cheaper, which:

1) Makes it point on point with the i5 4690k's price, but the with the Xeon having more cores, it would be viable solution for gamers who already have a graphics card and need the 4 extra threads

2) Makes it cheaper compared to the i7 4790k, having the same amount of cores but just slightly slower.

Why on earth would you want to buy a 1271, it has a lower clockspeed (lower overall performance), no iGPU, and a locked chip, when for the same price you can get an i7?

What do you mean i7 equivalent?  You mean the same clock frequency?  There is no such thing as a xeon that is clocked at 4 ghz.  Because otherwise they are essentially the exact same cpu.  Same number of cores, both have hyperthreading, both have the same amount of cache.  The i7 can be overclocked and has an iGPU, but it also costs $86 more dollars.  From your post I was under the impression you were trying to get something that performed similar to the i7, but was cheaper.

To me the 1231 just looks like a lower clocked 1271, and both are the same as the i7 in terms of cores and hyperthreading, just with lower clock speeds.

The 1271 boosts up to 4ghz

And the i7 boosts up to 4.4 ghz, your point?

the 1271 is a lot closer to the i7

And also the same price as the i7.  Are you actually considering buying an inferior cpu for the same price?

Seems like the best option would be the actual 4790k then, however, what will this PC be used for?

He wants to game so I suggested the i5, but he insists on having an i7. That's what I'm going with because there's no real reason to buy a Xeon

There really is not much of a reason to have a 4790k instead of for example the 4690k, but hey, if he can afford it, why not. And i guess hyperthreading can become more useful as games will be probably be able to use more cores/threads in the future, so it should have a longer lifespan.

You asked if there was a cpu equivalent of the i7, which was cheaper.  I told you what it was, but instead you kept bringing up the 1271.  I never mentioned the 1271 because I didn't find it worth mentioning, considering it was a worse cpu at the same price as the i7.  If you weren't interested in buying it why keep mentioning it?  Dunno why your getting upset with me.  I'm just trying to help.

I think that's what he wanted too. He might start doing some programming for his work and it might be helpful. He also never upgrades so future-proofness will be great

Ughh, that term 'futureproof' makes me sick.

i7 would be the best shout. And if he got the K-skew, he'd be able to overclock for better performance down the road, thereby being relevant for longer.
