I just bought an Asus GRYPHON Z87 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard because it was basically half off, but I'm not willing to commit the cash for a 4690K yet. I only have so long before I can't RMA any more, is there any way to test whether or not it works without a fitting CPU? If it just plug it into the power supply and try to boot, and it beeps or something, is that good enough? Or do I just have to pray it works?

Hope and pray. You need a CPU and RAM to validate it, plus a power supply. I've had gimpy computers before and you literally have to validate EVERYTHING on the motherboard before ruling it out. If it's that big a deal, I would get a cheap old 1150 pentium or Celeron (or a g3258 :3) to validate it with. Otherwise, say your prayers.

Nope, you'll need a cpu to test it.

Just curious how many have had an issue that warrants an RMA. Only time I've had a hardware issue with a mobo was when I dropped my gpu on one the trace lines for the audio chip and cracked it.

Never had one any hardware dead from factory. Asus makes excellent hardware.

they have a BIOS flash back feature that works without CPU/RAM installed. you could try and do this - I assume if it completes this process its a safe bet that it works???

You will need to do this anyway to get the 4690k to boot...

Sorry I'm so late to reply, I didn't set up the email notifications for this post

I hooked it up to an extra psu I had and I got a power light. So it receives power, that's good. Then I read the manual and there are LEDs by the RAM, CPU, and a few other places that indicate problems.

I tried to power it on with the "DirectKey" feature and the CPU LED came on, so I took it as at least being aware that there is no cpu

So it probably works? Unless there's a RAM issue or something, right?

i think they have a 5 year warrenty so if you don't plan on getting an 1150 cpu in that time then you bought the wrong board.
