Low GPU usage

Hi LTT comunity,

Noticed a weird issue recently where sometimes my framerate would be really really low in games due to my gpu running at really low clock speeds. Usually when i play games its absolutely fine and my gpu boosts to where it should. However, sometimes when i open up gta v (seems to be gta in particular) i get really low fps and my clock speed on the gpu is very low.

AMD fx 8350

Asus m5a 78l-m usb 3

GTX 970

nope i have it on "prefer maximum performance"

No idea on other software but on EVGA Precision X you can set your power to over 100% and the card will want to push itself harder (also speed up your fan to stop thermal throttling)

Done that, and no thermal throttling, my Gpu clocks never go above 400 before or after launching the game. This only happens after i launch gta, all other games are fine. However now ive launched gta and the problem has started, i literally cant play any games

I think your cpu is bottlenecking you.  GTA 5 is a very cpu intensive game.  If it can't keep up the card might be downclocking because it doesn't have anything to do.  What is your cpu usage at when it starts downclocking?

Nope not a bottleneck, dont worry ive checked all that. Usually the game runs fine 60fps. But sometimes ill load in and itll be really low fps. Also when this happens my usage is what it would be on all components at idle.

Do you have the latest nvidia drivers?  Have you tried changing video settings?

Update for anyone with this problem: Seems it was a problem with MSI afterburner. Downloaded precision X and everything seems to be great, i even managed to get more of an overclock.
