Cheap Build for Minecraft Server?

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

This and a good upload speed will suffice: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1kNM2

I recommend using linux and not windows for the server.

Can anyone recommend a cheap build for around $500 that could run a ~20 person Minecraft server?

Your first prority is going to be ram, first of all, so might want to upgrade to 16 or 12 gb later on, in the meantime you don't need a good gpu, so this build has intergrated graphics.http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1atDA

Will more cores on the CPU help?

You would need a video card. If you wanted to go ATX http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1kK5v

Why a 60gb ssd not a hdd

You're just running a Minecraft server which doesn't need that much storage and an ssd helps load chunks faster.

The faster the CPU (Intel only, i5 or i7) the better. The more RAM the more slots you can handle as long as the bandwidth of upload/download are sufficient. CPU speed makes overall server experience snappier (good TPS, ticks per second, time).

More Cores doesn't help you. Intel i5 is faster than anything AMD has. Get i5 4670K if you want to overclock or Intel Xeon E3-1230/1240 v3 if you don't want to overclock. (xeon e3-1230 v3 or e3-1240 v3 is the same as i7 4770 but it can't be overclocked and has no integrated graphics card).

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

CPU: Phenom II x6 1045t ][ GPU: GeForce 9600GT 512mb DDR3 ][ Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P ][ RAM: 2x4GB Kingston 1333MHz CL9 DDR3 ][ HDD: Western Digital Green 2TB ][ PSU: Chieftec 500AB A ][ Case: No-name without airflow or dust filters Budget saved for an upgrade so far: 2400PLN (600€) - Initial 2800PLN (700€) Upgraded already: CPU

This is overkill for a server of this scale.

Btw, it's also because you can and you don't need much storage anyway. A normal hdd would do for any <100 player server but the speed of thee ssd is nice.

So you say "go for speed with SSD" but "dont go for real performance increase with better CPU because it's not worth it"? XD

The better CPU the faster Java code is being executed. The faster the code is executed, the more ticks per second (till the full 20TPS) the processor can make under huge load.

Worse CPU will of course be enough to start the server, but if the action goes too fast or everybody goes to different chunks and start using redstone or mobs start to spawn a lot, or you use any mods, things may start going slower, and slower, and slower. Better CPU = better at huge load. Decide for yourself. =)

More cores won't help you with Minecraft, you might as well go for 2 cores here. BUT more cores will help the server do Minecraft AND something else in the background.
