I would go with the i5 unless you are planning to edit video or work with 3D.

i7 has 4 cores/8Threads, so it will do better in multi-tasking areas. If you do a lot of rendering then i7 will excel in that as well. If you have the $$ then future proof by getting the i7

Typically this means that Hyperthreading is the difference (between i7 and i5).  I don't do either of those tasks, but in theory, the Hyperthreading should improve performance by completing tasks faster.  This is because there are more virtual cores with Hyperthreading, allowing more tasks to occur simultaneously and complete faster.

I like maxing things out so I would go for the i7 especially if you can get it from microcenter.

Not necessarily but usually. The i7 is better than the than the i5 at programs that can take use of more than 4 threads.

The i3 is a solid cpu. It's probably not your i3 that makes your windows lag. My guess is it's your hard drive.

The only difference between the i5 and i7 is hyperthreading. Unless your program can take use of more than 4 threads, you're doing sophisticated sound editing and you're doing work that can make the money back, it's not worth it.

It's probably your laptop hard drive then. I'm guessing it's a 5400 rpm hdd.

What about the i5/7? Are you talking about desktop or mobile?

Your thinking of doing a new build, right? You can't replace the cpu in a laptop.

CPU: 5930K @ 4.5GHz | GPU: Zotac GTX 980Ti AMP! Extreme edition @ 1503MHz/7400MHz | RAM: 16GB Corsair Dom Plat @ 2667MHz CAS 13 | Motherboard: Asus X99 Sabertooth | Boot Drive: 400GB Intel 750 Series NVMe SSD | PSU: Corsair HX1000i | Monitor: Dell U2713HM 1440p monitor

desktop

Mobile and desktop cpus are not equal. A desktop i3 outperforms a mobile i5.

I would get an i5 since I use an i5 4670k for photoshop and I open lots of windows without any lag. The i7 would give you a faster processing time but the difference is very minimal: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7003/the-haswell-review-intel-core-i74770k-i54560k-tested/7

i7's are multi-tasking beats with 8 cores to split the load with. Unless you're on LGA 2011 because in that case you have 6 Cores/12 Threads. But the starting price is around $500 for a 3930k and it goes up the to extreme edition which costs around a thousand bucks. So you should get the i7 because you WILL notice a difference if you stress the CPU. If you're on a budget then get the i7 4770k but if you're on a really tight budget then the i5 but either will be a great upgrade from an i3.

i5 2500k is a great cpu

my friend overclocked his to 5.3Ghz, I guess he got a really good chip. Unlike the new haswell chips that are so hot.
