"CPU Fan Error" On Startup - First Build

Go to solution Solved by The Official Czex,

Thank you! I fixed everything and found out the place I plugged in the fan before were for the top 3 fans that are optional on the case. They are not part of the chassis so they are not monitored by the motherboard but they will spin and keep the computer cooler. So technically, I could have left the chassis fans plugged into those ports instead of the motherboard, but now I can monitor them easier through the bios. Thanks for all the help!

No problem!  :D

Hello guys, I just built my first computer, when I start it up, I get a CPU fan error and it says to press F1 to get to the bios. When Im looking at the bios, it says N/A next to CPU fan and also next to CHA1 FAN but CHA2 FAN is working fine. Did I plug everything in correctly? I have an Asus Z97-E motherboard with the fans that came with my Fractal Design R5 case and the Hyper 212 Evo cpu cooler.

Here is a picture of my bios: a7652e1bf109291a085e074842a268dc.png

EDIT: The fans are spinning (both the heatsink and chassis fans) so I guess its plugged in right, but maybe in the wrong slot or something?

Your CPU fan might be in the wrong header.

Well the fans are spinning, just not being recognized by the computer if that makes sense

It's probably in the wrong header. Are you sure it's plugged into the CPU fan header or is it in a System header?

Board should sy CPU-FAN or something like that on a 4-pin header near the CPU.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

I apologize for my ignorance, but I dont know what the headers are. I just plugged the chassis fan into  cord that came with the case, i dont remember what i plugged the cpu cooler into, im checking now

Make sure you are plugged into the main CPU header and not the optional CPU header beside it. I have a Z97-WS and it has a main CPU header and a optional.

That was your problem, wasn't it? Honestly, it's a pretty easy mistake to make, easy to fix, too.

Ok so i opened it up and the CPU fan was plugged into CHA2 FAN slot on the motherboard, so I put it into the CPU FAN spot. Hopefully that fixed the CPU problem, but now i dont think the CHA (chassis?) fans are plugged in correctly

Go ahead and plug in the other case fans and let's see what's what. I hoped I fixed your problem!  :D

Alright! So i plugged in the case fans to the correct spots on the motherboard and im testing it now so make sure they work. Although, i did unplug them from something else which seems to be the plugs for headphone and microphone jack on the front of the computer (they had the same size plugs as the case fans apparently)

Yep. Just make sure you read the little labels on the headers next time. They can be pretty difficult to read sometimes.  :D

I'm glad I could help! If you have anymore problems, just ask.
