Once you have rooted the device, and installed a custom bootloader like twrp, you should be very easily able to install an older version of the cynagenmod rom that runs kitkat

Hey I was hoping I could get some help on how to root my Android Asus nexus 7 2012 tablet running android 5.1.2 lolipop ?

Also is there any way to jump back to kit kat? I really hate lolipop and it's made this tablet run like shit.

Lollipop is the bane of the Nexus 7 2012.

Two options,

1. Flash stock android for the Nexus 2012.

2. Go Custom ROM like cyanogen mod

EDIT: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images here is the link. It's a solid option if you liked 4.4. Ctrl-F and look for nakasi

Uhh, wasn't the Nexus 7 running stock Android in the first place?

Unless you meant KitKat.

I think they mean that you can flash either the stock Android factory image of KitKat, or install CyanogenMod 11.

Rooting Nexus devices can be done regardless of installed OS, because the "proper" way to do it just involves unlocking bootloader and flashing Superuser in recovery. While you're in there flashing Superuser anyways, might as well flash back to KitKat if you want to.

"Rawr XD"

Yeah the Nexus 7 was running stock Android. That link I posted has an image of every version of Android back to 4.1.2 and up to the current Lollipop release for the Nexus 7. It means you can essentially rollback if you dislike changes. I did that with my Nexus 7 after lollipop was released but I switched to Cyanogen Mod to try it and it is pretty good.
