Is Steam OS a viable option for using my upcoming build before I can snag another $100 for a copy of Windows? What am I limiting myself to, in the realm of web browsing and game selection. I primarily game on Steam, but I'm guessing I can't really use Origin, which is a slight inconvenience.

It may be up to a month before I can snag Windows because I have no predictable income. (Still a teen) Another path I'm considering is the Windows 10 Insider, but that's kind of a binding choice to a constantly experimental version of Windows. I wouldn't mind that much, as long as everything continued to function the way its meant to.

If you are curious, my build plan is an I5 4410, GTX 970 ITX version from EVGA, a decent LGA1150 ITX mobo, 8GB RAM from I dont care where, 1TB drive, a decent modular PSU(500W), all inside a Raijintek Meti, the smallest case that I could find with a very nice price point and good looks.

TL;DR

Steam OS or Windows 10 Insider for a temp OS? Also, read my post, I worked hard on it. (/sarcasm, for those who need it)

Use normal Ubuntu based distributions, you get so much more out of those then SteamOS

Open Steam up and filter all the games by "SteamOS+Linux".  If you see games there that you like, or already play, then don't use SteamOS and use some *buntu variant.  (like Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu).  SteamOS is alright, but it isn't necessarily meant for a "desktop".

You can also run Windows applications in Wine, some run really well, some don't.  If a lot of the games you like only run natively on Windows, then you can either get the Technical Preview, or buy a cheap key from G2A, or that subreddit, for about $20.

All SteamOS games run on Ubuntu-based Linux Distros (Ubuntu itself, Linux Mint, etc), so get one of those.  At least that way you can use the PC properly for non-gaming uses too.

If there are a lot of Windows-only ames you want and that aren't compatible with WINE, you're stuck with Win10 Preview.

Err, MS announced that they're giving Win 10 to all preview users no questions asked.

Go sign up for MS Insider, install the Preview then when it releases you'll get upgraded to a legitimate copy of 10 at no cost. Anyone buying windows right now is just silly.

Nevermind, i was wrong.

The preview is actually a good temporary solution if people want to use Windows for a while before buying a new license.

That is of course assuming they can live with even more bugs and instability than the regular version.  (sorry, couldn't resist  :P  )

I would just go ahead, and use Windows. Windows 7 alone is pretty solid. I don't really have many issues with it.  Yes there will be a significant decrease in steam applications you can use if you go the way of Linux(SteamOS is a linux distribution). If you wish to save money, you can download Windows 8 from the Microsoft Technet Evaluation site. And when your 30 day trial is up, you can use the CMD command slmgr /rearm Up to a total of three times I believe(But only do it when your 30 day trial ends). In the meantime you can save up your money for a copy of Windows 8 (Which includes a free upgrade to Windows 10 -- I highly recommend upgrading to it), or Windows 10 when it finally does come out.

Another option is the consumer preview for Windows 10.
