So I've been running Windows 8 off of my Intel 330 SSD for a few weeks now and it seemed to be running fine at first. However, now it seem that it's taking much longer than it should to log into Windows after I enter my password (ie. 10-20 seconds rather than 0-2). I'm not sure, but I think it has something to do with my HDD (2TB Seagate Barracuda), as sometimes I can hear it winding up just before it goes to my desktop. I've had the SSD running fine for 6 months now, so it's probably not dodgy.

I've tried cleaning up and delaying some startup programs, but that didn't seem to make any difference. My disk performance rating from the WEI went from 8.1 to 8.0 in the last few weeks, but that's probably within margin of error for the testing.

It's not a massive issue, so I'm not going to go to extreme lengths to fix it, just a mild inconvenience is all.

Have you remembered to turn off scheduled defragmentation and hibernation?

Hibernation is off by default, isn't it?

And scheduled defragging makes a difference?

(oh god, just checked and it was defragging my SSD... fixed now)

Hibernation is not off by default. To turn it off do this:

  • 1. Open an elevated command prompt (Run CMD as administrator)
  • 2. Type "powercfg -h off"
  • 3. Close the command prompt

SSD's does become slower as you fill them with data, and the defrags probably didn't help. Then again it does seem like a fast degradation. Do you have many programs that starts with Windows and are those programs stored on the harddrive.

How old is your SSD at the moment? I've been running a Vertex 3 120GB for almost 2 years now and I've definitely noticed it getting slower over time. Formatting and reinstalling is probably the only option left if it aren't the startup programs.

Nope. All startup programs are on my SSD

6 months now. It was working fine with a clean install a few weeks ago, so I assume it's a startup program issue, but I've disabled as much as I think should be necessary and it still seems slow. Is there any way to delay startup programs in Windows?

If you've un-checked all your programs (except Windows ofc) at MSCONFIG it should be about as bare as possible.

Using Windows 8, so MSCONFIG just redirects me to Task Manager. In there, there's a hell of a lot of disabled things, and 17 things launching at startup, 7 of which I know what they do, along with a shitload of intel stuff... Should I try disabling them? (dafuq is iusb3mon, igfx Tray Module, hkcmd module and other shit like that?)

Unforutnately my knowledge does not extend to that area...But I presume it won't make much of a difference...definitely not 10-20 seconds.

Windows 8 shouldn't be defragging your SSD anyway. The OS should of detected your SSD and told defrag to TRIM the drive and not defrag it... Very strange.

Intel stuff are 99% of the time just fine and no need to mess with them.

You should never defrag an SSD there is no use for it!.

How long does it take to boot into safe-mode?

You could capture a trace of the stratup using Procmon, it will show you everything you could possibly want and then (a lot) some.

Beware though it WILL take much longer to startup with it capturing but you only have to do it once so it's

not that bad (do a puzzle or something in the mean time ^_^   ).

Safe mode boots up much faster than normal mode. I played around with some startup delay utility and that kinda screwed up the programs that run on startup, so now I only have 10 running on launch, yet boot times are still slow. I have no idea how to use Procmon, it looks so confusing :S

Unhook your 2TB hard drive and see if the problem persists. I have a feeling it's your 2TB hard drive also. I had a similar issue but my boot time from start to desktop was in minutes where it should have been maybe in seconds and the problem was with the 3tb hard drive I had.  I think  I fixed it either by formatting it in mbr instead of GPT ....you could try running it in non-AHCI mode also.

Well now we know it's software and not hardware related, so that's good news!

Have you tried System Restore?

When did it start to happen?

Tried that and surprisingly enough it didn't make a difference (actually surprised me), so I guess it's just some program somewhere that's acting up on me.

Yes it is! No I haven't, just sorta set this up in the last few weeks, so didn't bother making a restore point. Only got 4 auto-restore points, all within the last week, and I've had this minor problem for a couple of weeks now maybe? I didn't really pay attention to it at first because I had bigger things to worry about. Now I'm just nitpicking with my computer and trying to get everything sorted.
