I have a DSL connection that is 7MBPS down and 1MBPS up. normal to download 600Mb it takes quite some time but Windows updates take only a minute or so. I wonder if there is something going on that i don't know about...

Microsoft has very good upload speeds?

Perhaps your settings are to download updates automatically but to wait for you to install them?

Some part of the .msi update files are stored on your pc if they have been previously downloaded. Windows Update then indexes them and downloads only the rest of what it needs, like resuming a steam download. You'll notice that during the "download" there will be no network activity on your networking tab in task manager, but your hard drive indicator light will be going crazy. It's "downloading" from the .msi file on your hard drive.

If you want fresh .msi update files to show up in windows update, right click on your C: drive and hit properties. Then click "disk cleanup" after a little while, select "temporary files" inside the dialogue box and hit "ok". Any windows Temp files will be deleted and windows update will download fresh .msi files from microsoft.

Also, 7Mbps is equivalent to 0.8MBps, so downloading a 600MB file would take about 15 minutes.

My connection is all over the place sometimes and I specifically told Windows not to download anything.

Well good for you? This isn't really an issue unless you have updates that are failing to install, then you have issues.

Windows has a habit of downloading stuff in the background still. Good thing is it usually doesn't affect you much at all.

Don't fret about it windows will calm down after awhile
