Hey boys and girls, I got myself a pc recently and I saw that the gpu doesn fit in the motherboard if the giant fan is there, Its not really a fan, more like a plastic thingi with a heatsink in it. So the problem is that the plastic thingi covers some part of the gpu. My question is that if I can take out the plastic thingi and put the heatsink there only, is it possible?? Btw the fan is not attached to the plastic.

They have OEM air cooler thingies with green plastic parts all over the place

if its like that, dont take off the plastic thing, because it;s meant to direct the air over the heatsink. if you do, temps will be awful if the pc doesn't outright overheat.

first of all boys and girls? really? :P

Sounds like you are talking about a shroud. Yeah, you can take it off, but check how it effects temps.

Edit: or not if it is that green thing @Generallee posted. I was talking about the ones that go to the side panel and are a bit more basic.

A Dell Optiplex overheating, then ultimately busting a cap on the motherboard, you're then greeted with a Boeing engine slowly throttling to full speed until your parents bust the door wondering what the hell is happening. Memories.

there you go

if the heatsink underneath the plastic is not in the way you could just cut the plastic, but leave as much of it intact because the heatsink needs it to direct airflow

I wont remive the heatsink, only the plastic thibg tjat covers it.

Removing that is a terrible idea, because if you do, then the fan will be blowing air in the case, but less of it will be able to take heat away from the heatsink, and that tower probably is a newer office optiplex with the Core series processors, they will overheat very quickly if you don't leave that thing on.

So this is one of Dells BTX systems. BTX first of all uses different mounting holes for the cpu cooler than standard LGA 775 so a new cpu cooler is out of the question. Also only single slot cards will work unless modded to fit (I assume you already know this :D) I would say your best bet is removing part of the plastic just enough so your card fits in.

Example: Remove part I highlighted in red with a saw or whatever you can get your hand on, if your card is any longer then remove the part highlighted in blue.

Hope this helped and glad to see your still getting use out of your BTX system :D

I concur, you are very likely to be SOL for sourcing an after market cooler.
