What are some good computer jobs in Canada that pay well 75-80k+ median? I had planned on moving to the US but my family is going nuts and won't shut up about staying in Canada..

I have originally been thinking software engineer since I am pretty good with developing software but it seems in Canada it pays shit.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I get that... I am looking for jobs to plan a degree around. You would have to be an idiot to think you could make that  money without a degree..

oh ok. I actually know a few. most IT people that I know of. Electric engineers (same thing as hardware engineers). Architecture (like 99% of it is software based). Teaching at a uni about computers.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Not entirely true. Experience is more important in this sort of profession. Either way, it will take time to work your way up to that level of pay.

It depends on what you enjoy. Database management and administration can make you a lot of money after several years, but it's pretty boring for most. SQL and other database languages are fairly simple, but there's no creativity to it.

If you wanted to get started now, look at apprenticeships, internships and even volunteer work, just so you can get a foot hold in the industry. A degree is all well and good, but having no experience makes it hard to get anything well paying at all.

Yeah figured that, that is why I asked about median salary. Would be awesome to find something that started at that lol

Not from what I've seen. Well, here at least.

The majority of places ask for experience. There's also the option to get started as a trainee, then work your way up internally, rather than going for a higher end position straight away. He may even be able to do his degree, or similar qualification on a sort of day-release scheme, so he can work and get his qualification at the same time.

Obviously the degree will help a lot for finding a job, but 3 or more years is a long time, especially if he's not coming straight from lower education.

Architecture? You mean software architect? It seems like that is something that would take some years (10+) to even get near becoming one.

French (East) side is going to be dead, the future of everything and not just tech in Canada is in the West.

The East is built on manufacturing which has taken a big hits in the past decade, bu the West has resources and we have more trade possibilities with Asia.

That is my opinion, but Alberta's oil boom which kinda tanked proved this theory. There is more potential in the West, BC is on the verge of a big LNG deal with Aisa so the future I think is brighter here.

There is that also that in the east most industries are very low paying resource and small farming based. Fishing and retail are the biggest industries in the east.

True for the maritimes, but its not like Toronto is is farming town you have major companies who call Ontario home but so does Vancouver, and that growth continues, especially with the dumping of Chinese investments.

I was in PEI last summer and it seemed that a lot of the 20-30 aged people had left and a lot went to Alberta, and sure there are a lot of people who left BC to go to Alberta as well. It was so totally different than my Island on the West Coast it was amazing, like you said fishing and farming and not much else. Here there is booming tech sector, industrial sector and actually a huge wine and beer industry growing as well. Plus we don't have -20 winters.

You do have those winters if you move an hour or two from the coast. Toronto is a lot like BC for industry. Yeah gas and oil has taken a lot of people to Alberta. My friend who is dumb as a brick went there for that, same as an uncle with a PhD. Oil and gas has a shit ton of money in it.

Get your degree. Stay away from america if you can. Then if you work hard and make lots of amazing things and stuff, bucketloads of money will come falling from the sky!

I second this. I've thought about a move to the US a few times, researched it and decided against it. The healthcare system is scary enough on it's own. Better to build your foundations where you are most stable i.e. at home and then start thinking about relocation. Once you get noticed/network enough you may even have the opportunities come to you. This is called being pragmatic - it's also one of the most important traits for a Software Engineer to be proficient in.

To address this talk of people lacking a degree being unable to make 80K +; it's absolute tripe. The director of one of the companies that I freelance for is such an individual. Moreover there's a number of people I have encountered along my journeys in the industry that have gotten to that point. Yes it can be harder but it's more common than an outsider/beginner would imagine.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.
