I posted on here a while back saying I was planning on building a gaming PC, and almost all of the parts I was going to use were changed. XD I was wanting to see what you guys thought about this build. (I don't want it to be extremely powerful, just decent enough to play games like Crysis at mid settings) Also, I know some of the parts I'm about to name are a little old, but I think they would be decent.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

GPU: Nvidia Geforce GT 640 or GTX 650

Ram: 4gb-8gb (DDR2)

Hard drive: 500gb-1tb

OS: Windows 7 or Linux

Not sure about a motherboard yet, but I'm thinking about an Asus P5GC MX or an Intel DP965LT.

Not sure about a case yet either, but it will probably be a Cooler Master.

EDIT: Fixed typos.

Already have some DDR2 ram laying around, but I have been considering going ahead and buying DDR3. And I have heard very good reviews on the CPU.

Also I did forget to mention I'm trying not to go over $500 on this rig.

And I have heard bad things about AMD CPUs..

Phenom 2 x4: $100

ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS AM3+: $50

HD 7770: $100

Ram 8gbs DDR3 something like Corsair or some Gskill....: $70

Hard Drive-WD Blue 1tb: $60

Os: You can do both but if you do 1 go windows 7 for compatibility: $90

PSU: Corsair 500 watt: $50

Total: $520

BAM

If you cant go $20 dollars over you can get a smaller hard drive or 4gigs of ram instead but honestly $20 and its sooooooo much better than the system you were planning

dont worry either about amd cpu's they're not bad, if you want super good performance you're gonna have to spend the extra $100+ on an i5/i7

I don't  really know  what state you live in but it looks like your building a retro pc which usually means going to used computer parts store which usually has no guarantee  it's usually better to get new parts

I plan on buying all of my parts new. The DDR2 ram I have is new, a friend gave it to me because he never used it.

Here you go: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1kmG5

If you can't afford this, I would highly recommend saving just a bit more as this should be able to play most games on high/ultra.

I've heard about them getting really hot/being slow. Not sure if the people that said that were just using a bad cooling system or what.

I wouldn't touch an Athlon II x4 with a stick.  I've used 2 and they got smoked by the E8400, E8500, QX6700 and G860 even in quad threaded applications.  I have to rewrite my guide OP because they don't want me recommended direct parts but take a look here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/39116-pcbudgetsolutions-gaming-pc-buying-guide-ver-i/

Specs: Core I7-2600K @ 4.5GHz @ 1.35V, 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance Black 1600MHz CL9, Cooler Master Evo 212, MSI Z77 Mpower Motherboard, Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Vapor-X @ 1000/1400, Cooler Master HAF 932 Blue Edition w/ 3 Cougar Hydraulic Bearing 120MM fans (2 up top 1 in the bottom) replaced side panel with a window, and rear fan with a Cougar Hydraulic Bearing 140MM, Cooler Master GX 650 80+ Bronze PSU, Samsung DVD-RW, Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD, Seagate 750GB SATA III 7200RPM

I think this is what happens when people who don't know much about cpus get one because it has 'high ghz/more cores' and think it's slow compared to a more expensive intel cpu with the 'same ghz/less cores'.

It's not all about the clock speed and not all cores are equal.
