My problems with finding a GPU

Go to solution Solved by Redut,

I'd say wait some time for the 390 to drop in price and then buy it. As I know, it's normally like a couple of weeks or one month.

Hey guys!

At the beginning of this year I planned to buy a new GPU. So I sold my old 650ti to a friend and bought myself an EVGA 970 and was quite happy with it at the beginning until the problems started. Suddenly the card and PSU started to get an incredible coil whine I could even hear through my headphones while listening to music. Because of this and all this 3.5gb Vram stuff going on being an issue i returned it. Not sure which card to get at that time because a ton of rumors about some AMD cars in the next weeks and upcoming tests in school I ended up with my old 5750s.

Now that school is finally over for this year i would need a new graphics card for the holidays. But I am not sure what to buy. With the R9 300 Series released just now and not enough information given on DX12 compatibility with the now incredible cheap R9 200 series I am not quite comfortable with getting a high end GPU at the moment. Neither AMD nor NVIDIA since the 970 has also been around for some time. Since i want to get rid of the at idle extremely loud 5750s (no, a bios mod did not fix it) my idea is to go for a <=200$ one for the moment and wait for the next generation of GPUs or at least for DX12 to arrive.

What I would want is a GPU with 4-8GB of vram, at least the performance of 970 or better, one that is fully DX12 compatible and smashing everything at 1080p (maybe downsampling) gaming at Ultra settings and below 450$ (But I would be happy if it was less than that).

My question is: What would you get? Would you go for a cheap one and wait for maybe pascal to arrive or go for something like a 390 now?

My setup at the moment is:

FX-8350

Asus Crosshair V Formula Z

12 gigs of ram (1600)

730watt psu

2x ati radeon 5750 (annoyingly loud)

Get a 960 or r9 280/380. If you are planning on upgrading CPU then aim for something faster.
